The Seven Habits of Highly "Defective" People...lol!
    #7090609 -

Why don't we "fit in"? b/c we don't want to....cuz we don't to begin with so we may as well make a "movement" "site" and 'counter culture" to fit our square pegs cuz the round holes of the main stream cut off out edges and it hurts.

Habit 1)-We self medicate without direction except from peers who do the same...gr8...blah!

2)-B/c we've been burned we shy away/run the other way from those we could possibly trust who have an idea where we're coming from or could be clued in without judgment. Yeah, few and far between but they're there.

3)-We sometimes get into self-destructive or just unhealthy habits because we haven't re-written the script of our childhood. Just say "NO" to repeating the destructive or hopefully just stupid mistakes of our upbringing without hating...it's counter productive.

4)-We don't pick ourselves up fast enough to be pro-active in our adult lives. I am the only one I have to answer to in the end...I need to respect the decisions I make...yeah I'll make mistakes...but if I don't learn from them to go ahead and adjust, jettison negs. and regroup with my "inner child" so to speak...(Hmmm sounds familiar...) then I'm the loser!

5)-We often don't allow ourselves to be vulnerable enough to accept direction and/or tough enough to ignore the nay sayers and negative vibe senders.

6)-We must acknowledge that while we are our "own person now" we are products of our past and knowing where you come from geographically, gene-pool and sociologically etc. (you probably can add to the list) can give us clarity to make decisions based on who we are to more effectively allow us to make ourselves into who we picture ourselves as.

7)-Last but not least....We often reject the Twelve step programme as "religious" when it's simply an effective guide to starting over, getting out of the repetitive destructive behaviour we were scripted into/chose for ourselves.

Hope this helps y'all or if it doesn't, just print it out and hang onto it for a later date for yourself/friend/significant other.

Note: in response to some positive feedback I recieved via pm...I reccomend the book "Like Yourself and Other's Will Too" by Dr. A.Y. Twersky..old book but there are used book sites that make out of print/used books available at a fraction of the orig. price.

How do you expect people to be receptive to your posts when you're always shoving it down our throats that we're imperfect and need help of some sort? Take it to the Physical and Mental Well Being forum.

Jesus Christ, MIC...

You're starting to come across like a soccer mom and no I'm not being sarchastic. I don't know which of your fashion magazines you got that list out of, but its all bullshit and I wouldn't even say that half of the items on that list pertain to me.

I too see where you are coming from. Especially #3. Most people don't realize that any issues they may have stem from their parents mistakes.

Most people here are under 30 and don't have the life experience to fully understand what you were trying to say.

I decided to try something here even though I said I was done with this to get some guys off my case....ha

You can take what you relate to from this original post...maybe a single point..and that makes it worthwhile...

Let's take the MIC challenge...Let's keep this thread alive and see where it goes...

Thanks for the good vibes...!

i think some self-help works.
but not by books. that's not really self help. that's the author trying to get you to think these things..

but also, another human being can be help. someone on your level. or someone who has been where you have been before.
but just realizing your mistakes, and then trying not to make them again(although, this is a toughy for me when it comes to initiating that i like a guy. i never do. and then sometimes i end up finding out, too late, that he liked me too. but i haven't fixed that mistake yet.. but that's only because i haven't been able to fix the insecurity in me)

What do you think that the authors of these so called "self help' books are doing.

They are merely humans who have been through tough times and are trying........through a book, to give advice to other people who have had similar issues.

I see books of this nature, to be very helpful for some people, maybe not so helpful for others.

But they do help.....I have seen it work.

These last posts have been even-handed and thought provoking b/c they were formulated after thinking first. I don't have to always agree with responses to appreciate the opinion stated there. It's helpful if it's well thought out.

Niteowl is correct...there are effective self-help books out there...Driven To Distraction was the book that instigated my willingness to seek professional help for ADD. The book may be enough alone, or it may be "just" an eye-opener that inspires you to get introspective and then seek assistance from a capable individual professional or not.

One reason I wrote this post was b/c of (Finally!) a good session with a counselor, and on an equally important but more serious note: the fact that so many young people are posting disturbing private information about hating family, alcohol and or drug overuse, not caring about anything certainly not improving etc. I brushed it away as exaggerations and attention getting till I got a few pm's from some honest individuals who seem to need encouragement to get things together in their lives. I pm-ed them back but felt it was appropriate to give a general wake-up call b/f more of us mess ourselves up with negative choices or escaping from pain in an unhealthy way.

My good friends, yeah, Al included, cuz sometimes your most quality friends are the ones who are brave enough to point out when they feel you're wrong, are keeping this post alive...way to go...HIGH fives to y'all! xxxooo

I think the kids of today are being allowed to raise themselves.
Parents "Don't have the time" excuse going on.

Every parent should be ACTIVELY involved in their kids life.

Sadly this is an ongoing problem in America today.

Ditto to both Niteowl and Sinbad.

Having to work full time to pay for my mortgage puts me in a tough position. I teach in the same school my children attend to be around for them but a tired Mum has it tough to really listen to them. An ADD Mum has it tough to understand and communicate with them. I have an edge now as far as that last part goes...get'in there...get'in there...

she likes to talk a lottttt on the phone if i give her a call just to ask her something.

and when i visit her, or she visits me, i get very annoyed of her the first day.
also, the fact that she is into the online dating. and is always checking/writing emails to men on her phone while she's driving, mostly at red lights. but still. wtf.
