lawnmower coil (recoiling) help

I've been trying to recoil the starter coil to my lawnmower. I can almost get it wrapped perfectly, but when I go to install it back into the housing, it slips.

I really don't want to take this to the machine shop, but I'm wondering if there are any tricks to recoiling the metal and installing it back into the mower.

For those that don't know, the metal has to be wrapped really, really tightly around the outside peg of the plastic wheel. I've tried using pliers and gloves to get better grips, but I still can't wrap it tightly and make it stay.

The end of this coil has started to bend some, so I'm also wondering if maybe it'd be easier to buy a new coil...?
