definitally do the oil change, and make sure u use the right kind for small engines, something to do with detergents n shit
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22288374
anyways theres what my mower looks like now, I took some pics of where the paint got fucked up from the gas, I think the paint would have held up to it, except when it came through the drain hole it actually went behind the paint.
then some more of the gas tank repair I just did
finally for those wondering why I bothered

what my manuel says is non detergent oil will shorten your motors lifespan, and 2 stroke will damage it.
I just went to fleet farm, went to the lawn section, and by the mower blades they had oil for lawn mowers and weed eaters and bought Honda
http://cdn.powerequipment.honda.com/pe/pdf/manuals/00X31VK67280.pdf
if you can't find your manuel then you can check that one out for general idea's on maintence, should be fairly similar until you get to specific stuff

can you keep it running by holding it rev'd?
If he can, the throttle is the problem.
Except... no.
As others have pointed out it was likely a clogged jet or passage in the carb. Could have been crappy/old gas or something as simple as an insect carcass.
The 'throttle' is simply a metal plate or slide. It either rotates/slides or it doesn't. There are passages in the carb specifically dedicated to low rpm operation.

Yes. But as has been mentioned, use a detergent oil... which they almost all are. You'll often have to go out of your way to find a non-detergent oil. It'll say non-detergent on the label.
Like this.

Thanks.. Yeah, we use non detergent oil for some of our big saws at work, so I know about it.. I just didn't know they all contained detergent by default.. I'll figure out how to drain the oil and change it.
Oil filter on a lawnmower?

no oil filter, there is a bolt below the dipstick that's your drain plug. On my mower there is also a hole in the deck so u can put a drain pan under the deck to catch it, or you can tip the mower on the side.
ive also seen people just drain the things out of the fill spout again tipping it.
also to keep your deck from rusting clean the bottom then coat it with the used motor oil
should run the mower a little bit to warm it up before draining

I would still use sae 30 Sae 30 is a single viscosity oil you really don't need 5w30 unless you plan on mowing the yard when its freezing out.

there more to it than that, automotive oil is meant for liquid cooled engines with oil filters. Small engine 4 stroke is meant for air cooled engines without oil filters, the type of detergents used is different because the engines will be operating at different heat and designed different

Small engine oil has a detergent that "congeals" suspended particles and makes them settle in the bottom of the crankcase and can be removed when drained. Automotive oil does not need it due to being filtered

The lower the first number means its thinner oil for cold weather applications. Like you would put 5w30 in a snowblower. It won't hurt to put 5w30 in the mower or anything, but personally I would use sae 30
