Lawnmower help?
    #4350524 -

Hey y'all! Everyone was real helpful when I inquired abour a weed trimmer, now I have a problem with the lawnmower. It is spewing white smoke! I had mowed maybe 6 days ago, no problems, but today whenever it cranks up the white smoke just starts pouring out and won't stop. What's wrong? And can I fix it myself or should I just go to a small engine repair place? Thanks! :peace:

Does it need oil?

It could mean the plug has fauled also. Check the oil check the plug or plugs.

Well, the oil level is great, no problems their. I just pulled out the spark plug and it looks pretty clean, no real deposits, though it did seem like their was maybe oil on the threads?
So put the plug back in and started it up and still the white smoke is coming out of the engine. :frown:

Is it air cooled or liquid cooled?

If liquid cooled, check the antifreeze level. Antifreeze is white when it
burns in the combustion chamber, and the best way to fix that is to
buy a new motor.

Signs to look for:

-- No more antifreeze (this one is a dead giveaway)
-- Mysterious milkshake-like consistency to the oil

White smoke probably means it's burning oil. The engine may have a leaky gasget or something else that is letting oil get into the combustion chamber.

Also: you aren't using 2-stroke fuel in a 4-stroke engine, are you?

i'm betting it's excessive blow-by. the rings are worn, and oil is passing by the piston and cylinder seal...causing some oil to burn with each combustion.

has the machine been tipped sideways or upside down recently? As this will cause liquids, such as oil to enter the combustion chamber. Or if the oil level is too high. Either way I agree with everyone who says it's oil burning. The plug(s) wouldn't show signs of fouling until the machine has been smoking for a while (i.e.; several mowings). My suggestion is to get high grade fuel and perhaps use a VERY small amount of engine cleaning/treatment additive. (appx. 1/4 the potency you would use for a car) If the smoking persists for more than twenty to thirty minutes, I would take it to a repair facility. Or run it to death, whichever you prefer.

How come no one said to ask Flowstone........

Pretty much they are right. Also, when I tip my mower on the side to sharpen the blade and start it up, it will spew white smoke for 10 seconds. This is normal. Check a few key things: Pull the spark plug out, make sure it is ok, and wipe it off. Check the air filter, and check the oil level. Also, if it's been over a year and a half, CHANGE THE OIL! Make sure the blade is sharp, then go kick some (gr)ass.
