A/B Extractions - Don't put that shit in yo freezer!!

I had a couple of bottles of Toluene/Water/HCl/Mesc mix in my freezer for a couple weeks that obviously had a little bit of Toluene residue on the outside of the bottles.

I guess that stuff evaporates in the freezer because fucking everything that was not sealed completely tastes like Toluene.

Then the bottle spilled, some leaked into the fridge area, and everything in my fridge tasted like Toluene too.

Don't do it.  Or if you do, make sure your bottles are clean and beware the risks!

errr... toluene has a higher boiling point than water.

Then why does all my food taste like Toluene?

I've had several different people make this observation concerning food in my freezer and fridge. All of it.

It probably diffused through the air in your freezer.. kinda like a perfume bottle does when its open.

It didnt evaporate.

I did an A/B the other day and managed to get my hands on plenty of codeine hydrochloride.. I used toluene.

My entire house smelt like the shit for hours after.. not good.. not good.

I didnt even notice till my brother came home and told me haha.

Hmm, how is that extraction done?

Acetaminophen/Codeine mixture into Toluene/NaOH then salt with HCl?

First I cleaned up regular muriatic acid to obtain relatively clean/very strong HCl.

I did a regular codeine/aspirin CWE, added NaOH to the codeine/water mixture till the pH became basic. This turned the codeine sulphate to its freebase form.

Washed the freebase codeine/water mixture with toluene so the codeine fell into the toluene phase.. then I dripped concentrated hydrochloric acid into the toluene to turn the codeine freebase into codeine hydrochloride.

Filtered this, scraped the powder from the filter paper and let it dry.

i had the same issue.  i only used xylene though.  everything had a metallic taste.
