If I remember correctly, this is supposedly where the term "scapegoat" comes from. The fainting goats were used to give wild prey something to feed upon while the valuable livestock got away.

I've seen sheep do the same thing ......

on a side note, wouldn't that be called playing possum?
I know possum is famous for playing dead but whoever said that must have never been in florida.

Possums here get huge and when you get near them instead of playing dead they will open there mouth and hiss at you.

They don't play dead until/unless you really beat on them. The fainting goats literally pass out, not just play dead.

I thought it was just the muscles that stiffened up, they're probably still conscious when they're down.

There's a fainting goat farm a few hours north, that'd be a fun place to trip. :toomuchacid:
