I would have to say yes, casing will produce a larger yeild. With a 1/2 pint PF cake you'll get between 3 and 5 grams dried. With a tray thats is cased, you can get between 20 and 35 grams dried. I uses 5 cakes per tray somtimes.

So with 5 cakes you get 20-35 grams? that adds up to almost the same amount.

Casing by far yeilds more. Reason being, when you crumble/slice cakes up you are increasing the surface area of mycelium. Thus giving more area for fruiting to occur. When you birth a cake regular PF style, you are wasting the whole center of the cake. When casing you also add non-nutritional layers beneath and ontop of your crumbled mycelium. This simulates a cow patti in nature. It also helps provide moisture for developeing pins, often resulting in larger fruits or larger # of fruits. Casing is definately worth the extra step. I wouldn't waste my time birthing cakes. Its not hard as you may think. Casing is easy enough for the beginner, don't let people tell you to birth cakes until you get the hang of it. Sorry I have to go its 4:20 and people are waiting on me. Just case you'll be happy

depends on the size of the tray. Also. Don't use a tray with clear sides, or use tin foil to cover up the clear spots, it will otherwise pin on the edge, and ya dont want that.

just crumble your cakes, and layer them over a 1/2" layer of wet verm until the cake level is about 1" deep or so. That's a good way to do it.

I read at the Hawks eye site about this casing tek called 50/50. How do you sterilize the mix(wet verm)? or does it even have to be sterilized?

To get 5 dried grams per cake you need excellent conditions and about 2 strong flushers.

Like Lizard King said surface area is the key, I use 5 cakes a tray but I've got large trays. OH...thats another thing, it depends on your tray. You can easily get 10 grams dried from a "small" tray and 1 maybe 2 cakes. It will take some time for the mycelium to network and spread throughout your tray.

Cakes are nice! But in the amount of space that it takes to grow 10 cakes, you can produce a much larger yeild in that same amount of space if you case.

Have Fun!!!

Please tell me if you have to sterilize the vermiculite that you cover the cakes with...

As I Have learned recently from camel and shroom wizard...You DONT have to sterilize casing layers because at this point the mycelium is allready strong and mature and can fight off most contaminants on its own...and if you spot mold on the top of the casing layer you can remove it and replace it with fresh casing materials...However there are many people who sterilize their casings just to be safe I guess.

Will the humidity from the bottom wet verm. help the humidity? Lemmie get this straight from the many teks i've read...

You leave the top on the case, and spray top layer with h20/h202 combo and fan TWICE a day. Then you stop spraying when pins form?

Sterilizing casing material insn't really nessicary with Cubensis since the are so fast and hardy. Shroom Wizard and Camel were right. Sterilizing casing material is nessicary for more slower, delicate species of mushrooms that become infected easier.

from what I understand about casing(not much experience) is that it is really simple, a layer of wet sterile vermiculite, crumble cakes, then add a layer of jiffy mix. oyster shells also help but not neccesary. Remember anything i say has very little back ground at this point so be weary of what I say ...

I'm familiar with the Casing Tek it's just that I want to know if you have to sterilize the top casing(the part that goes over your cakes)??? If you guys say that I don't have to then I guess I'll trust you and try one cake without sterilizing...

Ripsnort, what Tek do you use? I've read on Ryche's webpage about a 50/50 tek that sounds good, vermiculite on the bottom and verm and peatmoss on top. Have any of you tried this?

What about the utensils such as the knife to cut the cake with? should you sterilize it or spray it with lysol?

Yea, 50/50's good. I've got a friend using it right now. He moistened the verm/peat mix in a pan, covered it w/ tin foil and baked @ 400ish for an hour. Don't forget to let it cool before you case with it. Oh yeah, about the knife, wash everything with hot soapy water, dry with a CLEAN towel, (not that dirty one hangin' off the fridge for two months) then spray with Lysol. Don't forget to clean all of the area your'e working in/on too

I grow using the PF Tek,
because it is the best.

But when I case, Ill use unsterilized
100% potting soil,
or a plain vermiculite casing.

I also used the casing recipe
from The McKenna brothers book for a long time.

For peat moss, before mixing you need to remove large organic chunks. A mesh spaghetti strainer does quite nicely. Nevermind the larger peat that won't go through.

A friend of mine had an experiment verm casing survive. He says he's never seen such huge .. portabellos.
