Im going to be using the 50/50 tek, or 50/50 tek+.....was just wondering what everyones experience has been with this in terms of finished dried product. Im talking about a terrarium the size of one of those rubbermaid storage containers. I also have this question about why you have to leave the inoculation holes on top of the jars u knock up uncovered for "gas exchange"? Does that verm layer block the contams?

You don't need to leave them uncovered. I put scotch tape over mine. The vermiculite helps block contams but they can still get in there through the holes.

I don't know if cotton would work good or not.. but I have used polyfill stuffed into a hole in the lid on many occassions with good success.

is it really necessary to cover up the holes? my friend hasn't covered up any of his holes on like 8 of his jars and they appear to be doing fine, like almost complete colonization in about 10 days w. Koh Samui. But if it is very important, he will start implementing this right away. Vis

it isn't necessary at all, I never block the holes and rarely ever get contams. the dry verm layer blocks all the contams but yet still allows gas exchange. filter disks and/or cotton are only necessary (IMO) when using whole grain jars or birdseed which are a lot more prone to contams.

Regarding 50/50+ I have had several casings of it going for 2 weeks and I am seeing very little myc growth. Puscle said that the instructions use too much lime. I used a 1" top casing layer and like I said it seems to be way slow. I have had problems keeping temps just right as the ambient temp fluxes allot here. My 2 cents.
