I gotta say this -

I've cased, and I've caked. The results from casing can look very good indeed - - when all goes right. I have pics in the gallery here to show one of my better casings.

But, personally and in discussions with other longtime growers, I've found that a single lost casing represents a lot of time, materials, and effort. I've never lost a batch of PF-style jars to contams, but I've watched nearly colonized casings succumb to yellow and green molds on a number of occasions. I've also found that it is more difficult to regulate moisture in casings.

If you consistently succeed with casing, more power to you. Pat yourself on the back. If you're an on-again/off-again kind of grower, I'll bet you'll find that a good "cake farm" matches or outproduces your casing efforts when you consider the time put into the two methods. Many people get one good casing and declare that casing is the superior method. Their tune often changes after the second or third contaminated tray goes south.

Just my $.02.

Thank you for all the good tips everyone, I'll have to try them...I mean I would try them if I were growing mushrooms but of course thats illegal.

In my experience, casing will give a much larger yeild with taller shrooms. However, is something that requires a little more time and effort. I personaly sterilize my casing soil so I don't have to worry about bug eggs and other contams inherent in the soil. I havn't lost a casing yet so I'm pretty optimistic about it. Casing is not for everyone, but if your a meticulous, careful, and motivated person, then casing is for you.
