Fruiting compared to Casing/ Yield Amount
    #841286 -

Ive read the FAQ, and seen that Casing has better yields and etc. The thing is, this is my first grow with mushrooms, I lack the experience, yet I want my yields as large as possible. I have 12 1/2 pint jars ready for inoculation. If everything goes well for all 12, what is the average yield? Im growing Golden Teachers, Equador, and FLorida +. How does this compare to fruiting yield and Casing yield? Should I risk it and go casing? Thanks a lot again.

This is what I would do .......
do some cakes of each one that way you will get some prints and do casings and have fun and gain knowledge

Like matts alluded, casing can actually be ?easier? from a certain perspective. Starting on the ?bottom rung? of cultivation isn?t important. Research and common sense is what will make you successful. Read up, and try to find what seems best for you.

Good. No one wants or needs money more than I do, but getting convicted on felony drug charges will ruin your life. Have perspective. Good luck.

i was once in your situation, several years ago.
and having learned the hard way,
i can honestly say the biggest most common newbie
error is being over-concerned about getting big yields.
don't get greedy.
i wish i had a dollar for every newbie i've seen jump in over his head, mixing and mangling various teks he's read into one big mess that never gets going good.
like one guy said,
pick a tek and stick with it until you have got it.
follow directions exactly.
follow directions exactly.
casings and cakes are both 'simple',
and both can give good results.
but they have different needs.
cakes are best for small growers,
limited space, time, money, etc.
you can fruit a cake in a jar or a rubbermaid
with nothing more than a misting bottle.
casing on the other hand need more precisely controlled environment, and often you need such equipment as a humidifier, hepa air filter, timer, etc. to set up a decent fruiting chamber.
but casings are easier for really large set-ups, there's the trade off.
but you need more space, it's harder to hide, costs more to get started, etc.
so you need to decide what your situation allows.
as for yields,
that has little to do with the shape of the substrate,
be it a cake or a tray,
and more to do with total available food and biomass/mycellial mass.
a typical pf cake, with dunking, will yield about 6 dry grams ,
some more, some less but that's about average.
that's with 1/4 cup of brf as food.
most casings contain much more food than the equivalent of one pf cake, so they do get more but on a gram of yield per gram of food basis casings are often less efficient than cakes, which of course is easily compensated for by just using more spawn/food.
anyway, to make a long story short,
i'd fruit most of those as cakes, to get some prints.
and make a few into casings to learn the ropes.
