Peoples throughout human history have be looking for some sort of "higher power". I would question whether this search came from within all people or merely from the framework of their cultural influence. Something has to be envisioned, conceptualized until it can be made real. Is it mere psychological projection on the part of the humans that their God is often anthropomorphic in nature? Can humans, if they are more than their physical shells, somehow collectively "wish" if you will an anthropomorphic, omniscient, and omnipotent individual? Are we figments of our own collective imaginations or something else? I would postulate that the consciousness has evolved in tandem with it's vehicle.

We can be disconnected with part of ourselves if we are not aware of or ignore certain aspects of being we wish not to face or acknowledge. These parts of ourselves, due to the energy given through repression or over expression, grow stronger with habituation. The problem is we do not usually have knowledge of the subtler, deeper functions of the mind which would cease the cycle of uncertainty and doubt regarding ourselves.

Just in case it was'nt clear, by prayer I didn't mean at anything like wishing for material gain. Acknowledging a problem is the first step to solving it. This is simple commons sense.
