I veered toward the former then right off the ledge...
Now I think its best to work more slowly within whatever its context may be.

...Or to somehow keep one hand on the wall...  or something.:eek:

Now I do less veering and more adjusting to what I've gotten myself into.

Destroy your ego and your dead. I wouldn't want to damage my ego, so I'm veering more towards the second one, because the ego is malleable and the possibilities are huge from what I see. Changing my behavior within it's framework.

Try to figure out how the body-mind works on a fundamental level. Then try to stamp out the things that make you suffer, or if you're more go-getting, the things that stand in your way. After a while the brain learns not to freak out, get anxious, be greedy, etc.

You can lose the ego in meditation but in my experiences it's completely unfulfilling and pointless. By losing the ego I mean just experiencing awareness and no emotion. A kind of biological and neurological stillness. It's not any fun...

Get rid of time if time haunts you, find out how to do it to your mind. Get rid of jealously if you hate the feeling.

Basically if you want to be happy you have to purify the ego, not decimate it.

Seems nothing's obvious in this scheme called life... your best tool is intelligence, use the shit out of it, and it will get even stronger.

Id = animalistic drives and desires
Superego = Social imperatives and morality

Ego = negotiator between how to best satisfy both the Id and the Superego within the scope of the person's sense of reality whatever that might be.

So given these definitions...

What do you think you're destroying when you say "destroy the ego"?

Furthermore... the notion of Id, Superego, and Ego are overgeneralised abstractions used in a model of psychotherapy. How can that model not still be applied regardless of what you think you've done to yourself?

Work within its framework although seems like learning and working go hand in hand.

So perhaps the rat figures its way out of the maze at some point or in this case 'you' never really existed.

I think that destroying the ego involves ultimate unifying bliss, but it also involves not being able to communicate with any person on account of being on a much wider plane of consciousness. Somebody without an ego could appear similar to a schizophrenic, with words that are riddles answering esoteric riddles. In a sense this would be just as selfish as being completely ego driven, because you wouldn't be able to communicate your wisdom with others.
I like the idea of a Bodhisattva, or somebody that has attained ultimate wisdom but has decided to stay tethered to their ego in order to help other people attain that wisdom.
I think that the question  is not whether you actually lose your ego or not, but whether you are able to transport between ego-consciousness and a higher consciousness. Having this freedom is more liberating than being trapped by either state.
So I think that the answer to the OP's question is to do both, and have them become a positive feedback unto each other moving towards a higher horizon in another direction.
Non-duality or something like that...
