Why does alcohol sterilize things?

It denatures proteins by dehidrating them (proteins require to be surrounded by water to maintain their shape, as they interact with the water. It also dissolves biological membranes because they are made out of lipids (ethanol is a lipid solvent)

Bacterial spores are resistant to alcohol sterilisation as they have a layer of complex sugars on their membranes that isn't affected by alcohol.

The best concentration for sterilisation is around 70%

Yeah, the real reason is it dehydrates things. The gist is alcohol is bad for life.

And yeah, like Nibin said 70% is a good concentration for sterilization. We use 70% EtOH for fume hood sterilization.

70% isn't the same as 70 proof. You Americans really have to start using worldwide standard measurements for stuff, lol

80 proof is only 40% alcohol

Yeah man take a raw egg and crack it into a bowl or glass full of strong Isopropyl.  It'll start turning white like it's being cooked because it's denaturing the proteins.  Pretty cool experiment :smile:

No. Everclear is 95% ethanol. Most vodka is around 40% ethanol. The stronger concentration, the more damage is done.

Ever put Everclear in your mouth? Notice that incredibly dry (not to mention burning) sensation? Thats the water being sucked right out of your epithelial cells... which also kills them.
