Is it on? Does it have an on/off switch?

mine does this too..but I noticed that when my computer is off it still feeds power to my monitor, keyboard and mouse. if it doesn't have an on/off switch you'll have to unplug it. pain in the ass, yes.

Anno, no on/off switch

Elbi, so I need to unplug it and only plug it in when I use it? You mean even with installed software it doesn't run with the computer? what a crock

to my knowledge, yes you do (if you want it to STFU while your computer's off)

I was upset as well, but when I'm not using it my computer outsources less power (which is good because my computer has a low and nearly inadequate supply, damn old building wiring..)

make sure to eject it properly though so it doesn't crash.  and according to some statistics somewhere the more you shut down and power up hard-drives the more likely they are to crash (like turning a light-bulb on and off).  if you didn't get a piece of junk though you shouldn't have to worry about that.

well then is it alright to just let it run instead of turning it on and off all the time?

It's weird because it does this every so often not all the time. I'll be watching TV and I'll hear it fire up or when I shut down my comp it will run all night but be quiet when I get home from work.

yeah it's fine, I let mine run most of the time. sometimes it fires up while I'm falling asleep and wakes me back up.
