What are the best external hardrives?
    #4183289 - 05/16/05 07:28 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Hi yall, i'm in need of more storage space.
I need it for music and movies basically.
250 gigabytes or larger...
What brand/model do you recommend I buy.
It needs to be able to withstand the test of time, as i want my multimedia to have a long, long life...
Thats my main priority.  Longevity.

Get a real hard drive and get an external hard drive enclosure that uses USB 2.0

You'll be much happier.

First google result for Hard Drive Enclosure

If you get a USB 2.0 external enclosure & a hard drive of your choice seperately, there are several advantages to this.

1. You can choose the hard drive that fits your needs (size, brand, etc.) I've always had good sucess with Western Digital.

2. If your hard drive ever does go bad you can replace just the hard drive & not the whole works

3. If your hard drive fills up you can just put another hard drive in its place

4. If you want to transfer files to another computer that does not have networking or usb support, you can pull the drive & put it into that machine & do your file transfer

Whatever you decide to do make sure you system (bios & operating system) is able to see a drive that size (250 gig). If your system is not USB 2.0 compatible, make sure your external device is downward compatible USB 1.1 ( most newer computers are USB 2.0 compatible & most newer external enclosures are downwards compatible to USB 1.1). Make sure your drive matches your enclosure interface (SATA or ATA 100, ATA 133, etc.)

Plus buying the drive and enclosure separately is much, much cheaper.

I bought an enclosure for a hard drive off of www.egghead.com

Works GREAT. Its USB wired and took 2 minutes to setup.

Try looking here - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/new...arent-id=595048
