How do I reformat an NTSF drive?
    #3509243 - 12/16/04 05:01 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Hi Y'all...
I have an external drive that I connect to my machine.  Its just a 40gb hard drive that I plug into a USB port.

The thing is, I want to format the drive to FAT32 and for some odd reason I don't have to option to format it?

I go to windows explorer, right click on the portable drive, then hit format and POW, I get an option to format it in NTSF, but not FAT32

What gives?

If anyone can help me out with this I'd be greatful.

Thanks a bunch!
Lana, the head banana

I think there might be an fdisk for windows xp, try doing start->run->"fdisk" and see what happens.

Open My Computer right click on the usb drive choose format. To format Fat 32 use a partitioning program. A knoppix CD will do it and it is free.

Easy. Go to control panel/administrative tools/computer management/disk management. right click on the partition and you should have no problem.

This won't work.
You can't format partitions bigger than 32GB with FAT32 in Windows.

Thus you either have to format it with NTFS(which is what I would recommend) or split the disc into 2 smaller partitions and then format those with FAT32.

Or install MEPIS/Debian and format it as ReiserFS.

place floppy in A: drive, right click select system format, once booted off floppy. Type Fdisk, in fdisk delete all existing partiions, then create a primary partition, then reboot using same disc and type format c:. Also a windows 98 bootable floppy will work for this

That is incorrect. I use a 80 gig external Maxtor drive. I deliberately used Fat32 even though I use XP, because I sometimes let friends with 98se use it. It works just fine.

137 gigs on 98se.

Lana, if you wish to try a boot floppy, rather than this iffy "tek", perhaps try one of the self-formatting and copying exe's from BootDisk.Com. Also, whether or not windows will create it, a boot-disk copy of fdisk, or fdisk from a, say, Knoppix, or some other Live CD should create the partition to whatever size you want in FAT32.

Thats not an iffy tek, win98 boot disks will work. it has the fdisk utility on it and will format in fat32. Just download the win98 boot disk off bootdisk.com and use the utility its rather straightfoward dos menu driven program...

Only, your mini-tek doesn't say anything about getting a boot disk anywhere, just formatting and then magically it's a bootable disk

Actually, you are both correct and both incorrect:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/docum...kc_fil_tdrn.asp

Quote:

In theory, FAT32 volumes can be about 8 terabytes; however, the maximum FAT32 volume size that Windows XP Professional can format is 32 GB. Therefore, you must use NTFS to format volumes larger than 32 GB. However, Windows XP Professional can read and write to larger FAT32 volumes formatted by other operating systems.

The reason behind this is that Microshit loves to intermix the use of sectors and clusters in the same file system definition. They use 32-bit numbers to store a sector count, such as the start of the partition... but then they also use 32-bit numbers to store a cluster count, such as the first cluster of a file (a cluster is a collection of sectors). To have a larger than 32GiB filesystem, Microshit would have to use 64-bit numbers internally to calculate sector offsets from 32-bit clusters. Easier to just limit it to 32GiB and claim that it is a feature rather than a bug.

That's an external USB drive. Boot disks won't do anything if they don't have DOS drivers for USB. The problem is, there are almost no drivers for USB under DOS.
If you can't do it with WinXP, the best and faster solution would be finding someone with a win98 PC and USB. Plug the HD, install the drivers and format.
