Mycelium or smooshed rye?
    #7000257 -

Hey, I inoculated ten jars with 12 cc's of cambodian. Its been 2.5 days and most of the jars look as they did when taken out of the pressure cooker. Using 12 cc's I inoculated 1 jar more than the rest. One of my jars looks thoroughly affected; however, this is my first time and cannot tell what is going on. This jar has a white looking sludge from the bottom a quarter of the way up. All the rye seeds appear to be opened and it almost looks like smooshed rye, but i can't tell what it is... None of the other jars really show any signs... I haven't been able to find a photo with clarity to tell the difference. Any information will help. Thanks

2.5 days is scarcely enough for the spores to germinate. You won't see anything for at least five, if you're using multispore inoculation.

It's probably smooshed rye. If your rye is smooshed, you're going to have anaerobic conditions at the bottom of the jar and thus bacterial contamination. I don't know, maybe give that jar a good shake to loosen it up?

Definately NOT mycelium. I'd say smushed rye, and your water content looks a bit too high. Either way, you've got alot more time to wait than 2.5 days. Good luck.

Would shaking the jar up be bad if it were mycelium?  Is it too early?  I am really worried because I have never done this before and had a bad feeling after the inoculation.  I didn't expect a smell from inside the pressure cooker (of cooked rye).  And the method i used, from from syringe to rye to spore print, shows results in 3 days time...  I don't see a single difference in the other jars...  I got the temp. in the incubator at about 82.6 degrees allowing the temp. in the jars to rise some from growth, but don't have any humidity adjustments.  It seems like H2O is collecting on the inside of the jar and keeping humidity though...  I used the entire, single, 12 cc syringe to inoculate the 10 jars and I am concerned that maybe that was too little and I might have to order a new syringe....lol :frown:

Okay. IT IS NOT MYCELIUM. Moving on, don't shake the jar until you see mycelium on at least 20% of your rye, or you will break up the mycelial network. Also, the rye smell from PC is normal. Did you use foil to cover the tops of the jars in the PC?
That whole "from syringe to rye to print in three days" is bullshit, that's not even close to realistic using that much rye and a syringe.

Next, drop your IC temp to around 80 or lower, never higher than 82. Humidity in your LC is irrelevant, as long as it is not too high (ie. raining) The H2O in your jars is because the temp in the jars is not the same as outside the jars, and you have too much water content. Also, 12 cc for 10 jars should be more than enough, there are tons of spores in those syringes.

I think I covered everything, but you can wait for RR or someone else with more experience to collaborate.

Good luck.

Yes, foil was used.  Appreciate your responses and time BTW.  Yeah, the smell had me thinking, "great! contamination"!  But I continued knowing the FedEx tyvek cutouts should prevent any bacteria from getting inside.  The first response to this thread was that the smooshed rye would create contamination... Should I immediately throw out this batch, or can mycelium still floorish?  It def. seems like there is more water in that jar then the rest due to weight.  How many days do you think it will be before I can tell if anything is working?  Thanks once again GoodbyeOrb!

go ahead and let them grow, if you can afford the time. Either way, you're going to have to order another syringe. Anyway, you could try shaking them to re-distribute some of that water, but others on here would know better. Either way, I never throw a jar out. Even my contams get carried outside and turned into outdoor gardens. Good luck.

BTW, did you boil the rye for ten minutes, then strain and drain? if so, how long did you let the water drain from the rye?

Following the rye guide here I simmered for around 30-45 min then flushed with water for awhile. After, I let the rye sit for 10 minutes and agitated it in the strainer until little water dripped out. What do you mean, "either way you have to order a new syringe?" I was planning on using 1-2 colonized jars to inoculate more. I saw this method on a google video when searching "growing mushrooms." The video is very informative; however, questions still arise when actually going through the process. Are you saying that you think i f'd up all 10 jars? Cause i'll order another 2'nght if thats the case....Thanks for help

This is the tek I use, it's RR's, and seems to be working great.

RogerRabbit said:
My rye tek:
Measure out your organic rye berries from a health food store, one cup for each quart jar you intend to make. Place them in a large pot. Rinse the heck out of them. Fill the pot with hot tap water, shake and swirl it around and pour it out. Do this three or four times until the water you pour out is clear. You'll be able to see when you have nice clean water to pour off instead of water filled with chaff and dirt.

You want to now cover the rye berries with three times as much hot tap water as you have rye. Use half coffee and half plain water. In other words, if you have two inches of rye in the bottom of your pan, you should have six inches of water/coffee above that, for a total of 8 inches. Add approximately a 1/4 teaspoon of gypsum per cup of rye. Stir these into the water/grain well. For my large kettle with ten cups of rye and two to three gallons of water, or (coffee/water)I add a tablespoon of gypsum and mix in. Cover and leave this to sit for 6-36 hours. Don't freak out if you go 48 hours and it smells like it's fermenting. No problem.

Stir well and set the pot on the stove. Bring to a boil. Boil for ten minutes, then, WHILE BOILING, drain the contents through a very large colander. (spaghetti strainer) If you're making a large batch, you may need more than one colander. Tip the colander side to side to get the rye to drain as much of the water as you can. Then, shake the colander in order to 'toss' the grain. This will cause a lot of steam to rise from your rye. Great. Do this a time or two, then let it sit for five minutes, then repeat. When all the moisture that will drip or evaporate from your rye has already done so, load your jars. The rye should look and feel dry to the touch when you load the jars. All the moisture you need is inside the grain.

Fill jars no more than 2/3 full if they are to receive grain to grain transfers, or no more than 3/4 full if they are to be inoculated by spore syringe or agar wedge. Use a lid with a synthetic filter disk, polyfill, tyvek or similar. Cover with foil and PC the jars for at least 90 minutes at 15lbs. I use 120 minutes. When the jars are cool, they're ready to inoculate.

This is the procedure that's demonstrated on my DVD.
RR

As far as using jars to colonize other jars, it is possible to cut some mycelium off and move it to an uncolonized jar, but you need a flow hood, or similar filtration equipment. Do you have any of that stuff?

If you can get the shrooms to grow, then u can just print and make a syringe, which is why i suggested letting them see how far they go, then taking them outside.

yes.  the other jars have a few seeds here or there that appear slightly opened and have white substance on them.  but nothing to the extent of this jar.  Thats what is so surprising to me, cause they were all done in a cookie cutter fasion...I am probably going to order another syringe just to be sure  .  For jar to jar transfers I was going to use a homemade glove box.  Thats what is used in the google video I described..

ive read that it is ideal to have %5 or so opened grains but you can be ok up to %20 or something like that . anyway i dont think you ll have problems with your other jars and be patient , ive found out that it is good to wait for 5 days or so (multispore) before the first peek that way you dont get dissappointed =)

hahha I know. I feel like a mother who's baby has a potential abnormality. I def. appreciate everyone's help and have consistently been impressed with other people's response time and as well as caring attitude. I assure that I will return the same attention to help others in need. I'll let you know how things come. Until then I will find a way to speed up time, or freeze myself...didn't work out well for Eric Cartmen though...

Yes, just like you said def. not mycelium. The babes are doing well though. I now have 5 jars with a quarter size spot of what is def. mycelium! One of the jars happens to be the one pictured in this dilema. Now i am wondering if this jar is ok to be used??? Of course the jar still needs time and I will take a pic either tom. or the next day. If this was contaminated and placed in a FC with other healthy specemins would it be bad for them? This is the fastest growing jar; however, it appears that it is healthy...time will tell i guess, i just saw water spots as a type of contam and got a lil nervous.
