First time trying rye went BOOM

i been wanting to try rye , so today i had everything ready ,...
the rye ...
a glass bowl ( which said on the bottom ok for oven ), oven and a bowl for afterwards

Well i soaked the rye in water and there was over a inch of water above the rye in the bottom of the bowl
i had just got it to a boiling point and turned it down to a simmer not even five minutes later
BOOM ... glass flying everywhere and rye and water soaking down the oven ...

So is there a spiecal type of glass pot i need to use ...
Are a spiecal temp not to get over??

I'm confused??? You tried to boil and simmer your rye in a glass bowl in the oven? Do you make Kraft Dinner this way?

Try steeping it in a pot (metal) on the stovetop. Then put into your jars and presure cook... it's less messy.

This is what I do.
Get a pot or pressure cooker out, dump the desired amount of dry rye into the pot or pressure cooker. Fill the pot up to cover the rye in water and put this on the stove until it boils. Once boiling, turn to medium heat and simmer for 45 minutes making sure the rye is always covered with water. Dump the rye into a strainer in the sink (you can save the broth for liquid innoculant or something if you want) then rinse with cold water and let drain for 5 minutes. Load up your jars / bags and then pressure cook as normal. 1 hour seems to work well for quart jars, and 2 hours for spawn bags.

Thanks for the input guys ....
i only used a glass bowl cause the tek said too ....and so i could make sure there was 1"inch of water above the rye ...
i'll just use a metal pot next time .... live and learn {=o)

p.s.s. shdwstr ( shadowstar? )- i'm sorry i meant stove top ...

You know, from what my cat tells me, he doesn't see a need for pre-soaking your rye grain. Maybe it might be necessary if you're using a particularly badly-contaminated rye batch, but otherwise he just tosses equal amounts (by volume) into jars and PC's straight away. He's never had a problem doing it this way.

well here a cookie for your cat and your lizard .... i was dealing with rye with buggies and mill worms
{=o? but i'll remember that when ever i buy it from a store and not get it fresh from the field
