Assumption
    #6981871 -

Why do we assume things? And why do we believe our assumptions to be so valid?

Unless we are assuming in an investigative manner, as in a conversation, assuming seems to be rather pointless, inaccurate, destructive, damaging, and ignorant. It effects both the assumer and the assumed.

I'm talking about assuming things in regards to other people, but I suppose it could apply in other instances.

Assumptions are the root of many problems I think.

Assumption occurs when one finds himself/herself in a state of not knowing about the nature of something/somebody. This, in my opinion, has both positive and negative aspects.
It's in our human nature to be curious and if you come to think about it, it's curiosity who has brought us this far, but also it's what made us do mistakes. All in all, I prefer to look at this phenomenon as something that has an infinite potential. All we know by now started from some assumptions, some of them turned out to be reliable, others not. Curiosity is the backbone of human progress.
We already know, by the simple act of observing what are the qualities and flaws of making assumptions, so now I'm asking you (and myself) this: how would this world be if we'd stop making any assumption? Maybe we would rid of lot of erroneous data, but also I think that our evolution would go very slow... we'd stop a big a part of the communication flux (which I find to be very important) and we'd head to knowledge with the speed of a snail walking on a hot piece of metal

I give inquisitive assumption an A+ and I do agree that it has aided in our progression significantly

but assumption that produces final thought/opinion doesn't make it, and that's the kind that I'm complaining about

quit talking out of your ass :bitchsmack: and welcome to the shroomery

alright well perhaps it is reasonable to assume in this manner, but why do so many people make assumptions and assume that they are solid deductions?  or how can they allow themselves to always view another person based on these assumptions?  it can be very degrading and I assume there are people who put up with it.  whether or not there are I think we often put to much importance on our assumptions, but I think I'm already starting to repeat myself.

I know exactly what you mean by that and I'm afraid all I can do is sympathize with you ... it sucks and we don't like it, it brings a lot of confusion but until now nobody figured out a way to stop it. As long as curiosity exists, there will be assumptions, and as long as assumptions will be made, some of them will have a negative effect. All we can do is use our own minds the best way that we can and learn from the wrong assumptions we make. Again... individualism. But I prefer to remain with a good outlook knowing that there will always be other individualists we can share what we feel with.

In my 6-7 years here, I have noticed that upwards of 95% of assumptions regarding myself by other posters (usually those who believe they are in-tune and somewhat psychic) are completey erroneous.

"Obviously you have never tried mushrooms."

"If only you had done some research on UFOs."

"Try reading some McKenna sometime..."

There have been thousands of these incorrect assumptive statements, but they keep on coming because so many are certain they have others figured out. Amazing.

In the Army I was told Assume=ass+u+me.

"A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

Did you assume people would read this thread when you started it?

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

From the Jung’s Glossary.
Intuition is the superior function in the big schema.
Intuition. The psychic function that perceives possibilities inherent in the present. (Compare sensation.)
Intuition gives outlook and insight; it revels in the garden of magical possibilities as if they were real.
Ex: There is ‘Don Juan’ at the Antartida. Speculative thinking; intuitive feeling.. Who can change that?
