Re: Literacy and Far-out Beliefs [Re: fireworks_god]

Well, I am starting to see delusion as an art form.

Perhaps, but go to several random Homeopathy, Crystal, Psychic or Creationist websites of your own choosing.

Then go to a Programming, Science or Math website and note the differences in presentational errors that have nothing to do with communication style and all to do with clarity vs. sloppiness.

Then report back.

Perhaps you can provide and outline a couple of sites and determine;
1) Who is the editor
2) Their background
3) How this supports your theory.
4) How is this valid in regards to meaningless technical jargon seemingly based on technical and/or artistic information that is abound and how it stands out.

You propose it, you should provide evidence.

I don't doubt that, but I am merely pointing out that the educated and the literate are just as prone to irrational belief as the illiterate, but they come off smoother when trying to explain it....doesn't make them more rational though.

Actually, yes it does.

What do you think "Rational" means? I suspect you are using the wrong word.

If people are using their knowledge (correct, or not)... they are rationalizing their thoughts.

Ignorance is more troublesome.

The educated are more likely to "Rationalize".

I guess in that sense your right. I can put my crazy bullshit across as "intellectual thought", and my delusions may be just a bit more organized than a non literate person could muster.

Yup...

And, you would be more likely to CHANGE YOUR MIND, when presented with conclusive evidence... conflicting with your opinion.

Not to Cervantes.

I have read scores of applications for the Randi Challenge http://www.randi.org and nearly all of them are vague, inconsistent and riddled with presentational errors while the skeptical respondents are generally clear, concise and relatively error-free.

Hrm, what about people who change writing styles depending on mood?
Whi arr joo sew cawwwt uhp?
its the meaning that matters, and when one rights
And what seems, with this language, varies upon interpretation no matter how precisely its written

at this point i think we can be relatively certain seperation exists as a fallacy of finite perception, and the only barrier to infinite creativity is a preimposed notion of certainty and artificial conditioning. nothing is without origin

I think all this can be viewed by some other similar perspective too, and a well known subject: can we reason without a language?
I am positive that we can

Note: for the point of this discussion, I am referencing beliefs which have not been pounded in during childhood from parents and authorities, but adopted later.

It is my observation that those people who put full stock in unsubstantiated beliefs tend to have poor spelling and grammar (in general) and less cohesive thoughts at least as far as written expression.

Now this is not meant to be a slamming. I just wonder if it has to do with brain structure and /or which hemisphere is most emphasized.

Seems that those with the most mathematical and logical minds tend to be much more skeptical of such claims than those who are more into imagination and have a poetic outlook on life. That same sort of mental precision (or imprecision as the case may be) is, not surprisingly, reflected in verbal and written expression.

IMO it's the fact that almost nothing was taught in childhood that is the problem. Or the example was one of a sloppy minimum of thought mixed with prejudice.
