300 (the movie)
    #6972627 -

Let me take this opportunity to say that yesterday I gave in and saw the movie 300, and it absolutely sucked.

Sure, you can say it had its eyecandy, but what good is eyecandy in a story which so completely sucks? One might as well comment on color patterns in a slab of crusty vomit on the pavement.

It was that bad, I can't imagine seeing that limp fascist piece of over-the-top hollywood crap twice.

When they all xxxxx plot spoiler xxxxx in the end no Persian felt as much relief as I did. During many of the "moving moments" and "powerful speech & dialog" moments I found myself alternating :stonedjerk: , :flipthebird: and making :blowme: motions at the screen  because it really sucked that hard.

What's your opinion on this movie?

You just didn't appreciate it for what it was intended to be.

When a cat poops where it shouldn't, you could sit and admire the perfection of what the cat intended it to be, or you could grab some TP and round up the cleaning equipment.

I didn't like it

They did a very good job representing the graphic novel of Frank Miller beautifully colored by Lynn Varley.

I can understand how you might not enjoy the movie if you were ignorant of the graphic novel.

Personally I would have preferred an army of hot lesbians instead of spartans but that wouldn't have been historically accurate. But hey, it had dinosaurs in it.

Umm.. let's not go into historical accuracy. It would be like musing on the historical accuracy of King Kong.

If I were a Spartan I'd be outraged at this movie.
As a moviegoer I'm just.. nauseated.

it wasn't supposed to be historically accurate. it was based on a graphic novel.

Of course it wasn't meant to be taken as historical fact, hence the dinosaurs. But at least it was honest about it. I'd rather sit through that than some contrived rape of history like Pearl Harbour or Braveheart or any of that shit.

I think it totally delivered. Did you like Sin City?

hahahaha that movie was horrible

i got in for free, and still left halfway through the movie

the spartans were perverted into sounding/acting like U.S. Marines

the dialog was over the top dramatic and cheesey

the plot, was there even a plot? as with most movies today there is no subtly, no symbolism, no elements tot he movie you have to figure out. Forest Gump, american beauty, easyrider... now theres something with a double meaning you have to debate as you watch the movie.

special effects? not a big fan of em. write a decent story and youdont need them. at all.

i laughed alot and people kept getting mad at me. xerxes was funny, and when they talked you just had to laugh and imitate them.

lousy, horrible movie.

I agree, as a movie it sucked, but I think the graphics rock!
I could watch those battle scenes over and over, and each time there's something else going on that I didn't see before.

I loved it

The only parts I didn't like were the ones that weren't in the comic anyway, with the rape scene and "freedom is not free" and all that shit, but the rest was great.

It's been a long time since a good action movie hasn't been grossly intermingled with a stupid love plot. This was one of those movies. There's a little bit of romanticism in it, but just enough to show a relationship between king and queen. It was no love-triangle drama bullshit that rips most good movies to shreds. :O

I thought it was a decent "shut your brain off" action movie. Everyone who is crying about it being historically inaccurate: IT IS BASED ON A COMIC BOOK.

What did I expect from 300?

- Over the top acting
- A movie that is pretty much a battle scene (with some minor other elements to pull it together, but really - didnt even need them)
- Special effects
- Violence
- Eye candy
- and an army of 300 men with 6 packs wearing tight leather underwear

Did I get what I expected? yep - and thoroughly enjoyed it for such. Was it a Brilliant movie? God no, was it a good movie? perhaps, was it an entertaining movie? yes.

The movie does have its faults, and I doubt it'll make it onto my re-watch list any time soon, but I enjoyed it for what it was.

Wiccan Seeker, if you want my recommendation for a brilliant movie (to help rid your head of 300) - watch Strangers in Good Company (also goes by the title of The Company of Strangers).

The premise of the movie is : a busload of old ladies become stranded on a back country road, and they talk about their lives while trying to fix the bus.

While this may not sound like the most captivating premise of a movie, I'd rank it up there as one of the best movies I have seen. My partner wanted to watch it, and at first he seemed embarrassed to want to watch it and was going to watch it alone (he seems to think I only have a block-buster taste in movies, but I digress)

The movie is a really touching movie, the acting is great, and you really become attached to the characters as you get to hear about their lives and backgrounds and how they star to relate to each other.

(this from imdb sums it up a bit better)

Quote:
A superb movie dealing with life, the interplay of human strengths and weakness, and growing older. The movie uses non-professional actors playing themselves, and is wonderfully refreshing, thought provoking and moving. I give this movie a high recommendation.

I really enjoyed the movie, and then after watching it I was told that the movie was largely ad-libbed by the characters which makes it even that much more impressive.

(... I actually think I may watch it again later today, in that kind of mood...)

Umm.. I re-read the thread and nobody is. It even has monsters.

That's a far more intimidating movie plot to go sit down for than 300
But I can see such a storyline, especially if half improvised, to develop quite interesting so I'll *cough* rent the DVD, and watch with an open mind.

I wasn't referring just to this thread, but to all the whiners out there who, for some reason, expected a documentary from this comic book adaptation.

Yes, they did a good job at that... However I would say the film was nothing more than the biggest piece of war propaganda Ive ever seen.

The themes were, that Persians (now tell me what is in modern day Persia? THE MIDDLE EAST) are less than human and not worth life.  Ran by Xerxes, who is the best representation of the devil I have ever seen.. I mean c'mon he had a goat headed opium den master in his tent!

And the whole time I saw the Spartans on screen i expected one of them to turn around and face the audience with an energy drink in his hands "RED BULL GIVES WINGS FOR SPARTA!"

Sure it was pretty.  But the substance of the story was not worth my time. personally.

Proud to be an American! FOR SPARTA!

dude, wiccan, no offense... but you named TMNT 2007 as on of your two movies-to-see, so i can't help but take your opinion on this matter lightly.

300 was everything i expected it to be in a wonderful way. it stayed true to the graphic novel, it displayed the spectacularly violent fight scenes that took badassery to a new level, it looked brilliant. but to each his own, that's why we have opinions.

so far as the war propaganda, it's only if you take it that way. it is entirely possible and probable that frank miller created it with that very thing in mind, however you read into it all that you want to. i don't give a flying fuck if frank miller or the producers or the director support the war. art is subject to personal interpretation.

hell, the way i see it, america is more closely related to the persian army than to sparta. the giant war mecha forcing it's will upon other smaller nations. an ignorant leader who believes he can't be touched and that his absurd behavior is condoned by god.

basically, it's like delta said, if you enjoyed the story of the graphic novel then you'll enjoy the movie and be able to fully appreciate it for what it did. if you didn't enjoy the graphic novel, well then why the fuck would you enjoy it in cinematic form?
