As the cake becomes fully colonized, the cake will actually shrink as the food (water and brown rice flour) is consumed. If you look closely at the jar, you should actually be able to see a space between the jar and the cake. If you can't, you are probably birthing a little early. When you birth at the right time, the cake slides out very easily with a little tapping on the top of the jar.

I've had to bump/tap the jars some to get them out.. Maybe put the lid at the end, elevated since its not screwed in, and slam it down if you need more force. I've never heard the shrinking cakes by eaten food one, but have heard of cakes shrinking while colonizing (I assume the substrate got scrunched). Anyhow, if its been at 3-5 days since fully colonized, don't be afraid to pop the things out. (IMHO)
