FC losing RH :(
    #6963464 -

At first, I had 8 1/2" holes (2 on each side, none in top or bottom) and humidity seemed to keep up fine, but I had been having a few problems with low FAE. So I taped over the big holes and drilled about 300 1/4" holes all over the place on all sides and it seems like the humidity has fallen to the level of the room the FC is in. I've got 4 inches of perlite down in the bottom (and plan on putting more down once i can afford another bag and get a chance to buy it), it's an 18 gallon sterilite/rubbermaid container w/ lid.

The only major flaw I can see is that the "feet" i put on it to raise it off the table are only an inch or so tall, so I dunno if it's not getting enough air intake through the bottom to pull the moisture off the perlite into the chamber or what.

not sure what to say. i had a chamber much like yours, then i switched to a tub with no holes, and just fanned twice a day, and my flushes were awesome. kept up my humidity, and the FAE with no holes (just fanning twice a day) was perfectly fine.

the tub with hundreds of holes is a bit overrated in my very limited experience.

I had some transpore (plastic micropore tape) covering the big holes and replaced it with some high grade packing tape and did an indirect spray, humidity seems to have stabilized though I'm still a bit worried.

Of course, my hygrometer is cheap so I can't tell the exact humidity, but it's still useful to let me know when my humidity is dropping like a rock :P

Of course, it depends on the size of the tub. 300 holes would be right for ones like I use, around 115 quart. A smaller tote would want a bit less. Also, remember a 1/2 hole is four times the area of a 1/4" hole.

You'll always want to mist. You want your substrates to be losing moisture, because that's a major pinning trigger. You then replace the moisture that is evaporating by misting. If you seal a terrarium up, you won't get nearly as good of a pinset, even if the humidity is 100%.

I have no problem misting all the time, so is it ok that the humidity rises and falls a few times over the course of a day?

If it gets too bad I might just tape up some of the holes :/

It should rise and fall. FAE will lower the humidity, and then you mist to replenish it. That's what you want. Evaporation of moisture from the casing layer or substrate is a major pinning trigger. That's why we don't set pf cakes on the perlite. They become waterlogged and don't perform well.

True to this. I'm a first time growing of the Cubensis strain and I had a totally enclosed FC and pinning wasn't happening well in to the 3 week area. I thought maybe that the gas exchange wasn't optimum so I left the lid slightly open a-jar and with in a few days they pinned

Remember that in this case shrooms behave like plants. Nutrients go from the substrate to the mycelium/fruitbody/leaves thanks to capillarity (the ability of thin tubes to wick water) and the cohesive forces of water. As water molecules evaporate off the surface of the shrooms and mycelium, they drag other water molecules with them, creating a flow of water through the organism.

More flow = more nutes getting where thay have to = lots of shrooms

That is why, as RR says, you want lots of FAE so that water keeps evaporating off the surfaces, which then increase the RH of your fruiting chamber and so the cycle continues until the cake dries out (which is why you mist)
