To live in such a way as to be true to their instincts which are telling them to step away from the prevailing system. It has to do with being honest with one's self and creating the life you want instead of just spouting rhetoric, IMO.

Yeah. I believe that when someone gets the urge to rebel they are acting on an instinct. Something about a situation doesn't sit right with them, so they seek an alternative. It takes considerable effort to actually follow through on that.

In the case of hippiedom, the work of following through on the instinct is a colossal undertaking. More than most are willing to accept. Luckily for them there is an entire culture of fashion and whatnot to get into that plays on their initial instinct, but actually just provides an escape from responsibility.

Squares toil voluntarily over their festivals too, that's not really just a hippie thing.

I've noticed that the most engaging way to rebel is just to be yourself. It's difficult, and if you don't end up a hippie, then you're not a hippie. Truely trying to do what you believe is not always rebellion. It could even turn you into a politician!
