In all the mushroom literature I have ever read its always been spelled abhort but when I look up abhort in the dictionary its not there. When I looked up abort I got this:

http://www.dictionary.com/search?q=abort&r=2

So what's the deal?

Will someone clarify this.

If its not abhort then why do so many knowledgable cultivators use this word?

Seems like a lot of people are wrong including me...

I swear that when I used to have a copy of The Mushroom Cultivator the authors used the word abhort as well...weird.

abort, abort....
The only one using abhort is PF.
It?s called abort because the mushroom aborts the growth, and not abhort because you abhor(=despise, hate) them.

They can be recognized by their blackish heads and the fact that they stopped growing at some point.

Thank you ANNO. I almost flamed that guy for saying its spelt abort too. I've been spelling it abhort for years because of PF. Wow...I am humbled.

Great pic of some aborts too. That will come in handy for newbies for sure.

do all aborts have black heads? i read somewhere that if it turns black, that means it started to rot, and isnt good for consumption. im a newbie, and ive never grown (yet), so is it obvoius when a pin stops growing and turn into an abort? it just seems too unclear as to whether it is a slow growing shroom or an abort. any further clarification would help. if its really obvious, then just say so, and ill see when i grow.

Shrooms grow fast - aborts pretty much just don't grow at all after a certain point.

Usually aborts won't get more than an inch or so long, have very faded or different-colord caps, thin stems, mycelium growing all over them, etc. The best indication I can think of is that the just look sick - sort of the way I look when I have the flu.

It's not especially dangerous to leave a mushroom you're in doubt about on the cake (or casing) for a few days. If the mushies around the suspect are growing healthily and the little one isn't doing anything, just pop it off.
