Mental retardation

Can someone with mental retardation (such as Down's Syndrome) experience satori, or higher meditative states?

yeah I read the article and it makes sense that meditation can be helpful for self discipline, but I'm wondering if they can actually experience a sense of clarity or higher consciousness.

yeah, that's the best I can do.  the topic was brought up some time ago but consisted only of speculation and it didn't get very far as they could only speculate so much.

Obviously this is nothing more than my own speculation, but I would almost say that they could experience the clarity and higher consciousness easier than a "non-afflicted" mind could. The ones who are free from anxiety of social norms, and all kinds of other stressors we all learn to deal with... I'd say they could. I'd want to imagine it being like a house cat. I'd say they probably have pretty clear minds. Although, this gets into the pre/trans fallacy stuff, too.

I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud.

I don't think housecats, or animals in general experience a higher level of consciousness. I think we basically contain that mind within us, since we evolved from animals, and the human brain grew out of the animal brain.

I think the mentally challenged (I would like to use a shorter label but somehow "retard" seems inappropriate :frown:) have more stress, at least socially...how hard must it be to build self esteem?

I would have assumed that they weren't concerned with self-esteem, because they aren't caught up in the self-games so deeply as the rest of us. Again, speculation. I don't know that this conversation can go much further, much like elbisivni said.

I think, last time, we ended somewhere near the perspective of 'happiness'.
And there for me it is clear, that 'retarded' ones may even achieve happiness much easier as, for example the intellectual thinker, who more often tends to depression or emotional instability.
But also this, is speculative.

but happiness would be alot harder for a semi-retarded person, i know people with mild down-syndrome and all types of problems, annerisms, brain tumors, every job ive worked at theres always been a couple or a few people that it was very obvious to tell there was something wrong there. most become sickly and have a bunch of overlaping disorders and depression, some are douche-bags, ass-holes, child molesters, ect they really become sickly, demented and unhappy, unless you are talking about someone with a walnut for a brain then maybe they could become happy with video games, but for the most part ppl with mild retardation are miserable because they cant reach the state of all the other people around them

Really? A considerable part of normal people do the same. Hmmm I wonder how and why... :strokebeard:

My my, just like most "normal" humans do.

Now leaving any sarcasm aside, you really can't tell... none can tell at least till this moment if a handicapped person can have mystical or spiritual experiences. Nobody could measure awareness until now.
My wildest guess is that people with handicap could/can (a part of them) have spiritual experiences, as well as "normal" people can act like total retards.

A kō•an (公案; Korean: gong'an, Japanese: kōan, Chinese: gōng-àn) is a story, dialogue, question, or statement in the history and lore of Chán (Zen) Buddhism, generally containing aspects that are inaccessible to rational understanding, yet that may be accessible to intuition. A famous kōan is, "Two hands clap and there is a sound; what is the sound of one hand?" (oral tradition, attributed to Hakuin Ekaku, 1686-1769, considered a reviver of the kōan tradition in Japan).

Examples
A monk asked Zhàozhōu, "Does a dog have Buddha nature or not?" Zhaozhou said, "Wú".
