This is a myth propogated by data recovery houses! While dust isn't good for drives, it won't destroy a drive immediately to crack it open.

It is not a myth. I tell you from personal experience that dust can and WILL mess up a HDD if all the variables are right. Of course it won't destroy a drive right when you open it, however, deciding to open it will more than likely negate the chances of even having it fixed.

Sometimes HDDs die. I say to try some recovery software (HDD Regenerator worked for me) and if that doesn't work, give it up. Opening your drive will do more damage than good.
