All this time I've loved you
And never known your face
All this time I've missed you
And searched this human race
Here is true peace
Here my heart knows calm
Safe in your soul
Bathed in your sighs

I see no correlation whatsoever between income and happiness. One must be able to reasonably support oneself (which a huge percentage of the world's population is not), but any substantial wealth in my experience leads to a lot of clinging and paranoia. A broad base of knowledge - of your social status, the limits of your mobility, of your cultural history and the history of civilization, of a broad range of spiritual and philosophical concepts - and a willingness to practice mindfulness, to apply reason, to remain open to debate and criticism, to take responsibility for one's actions, and to accept what IS, is what creates happiness IMO. A little LSD and psilocybin don't hurt, either.

My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Money doesn't buy you happiness, but it pays for the books that teach folks how to let go of material things.

I don't have a car. :tongue2:  Anyway, our good friends at Exxon Valdez will make sure we're not so outraged with prices that we stop guzzling their product.

I don't think that money can make you happy, but if you pay me more, I'll try.

If I hear another professor lecture on/rant about how throwing enough money at a problem can solve it or that money allows one to acquire happiness, I'm going to have to take a stand.

Although it is not the only way, money, when used properly, does allow one to acquire happiness.  It sets a solid foundation in a world where the new *jungle* is society.  Money is a requirement in today's reality.  Money buys energy and shelter, as well as the benefits of living with modern technology.  All of the above greatly contribute to peace of mind and happiness.

Do you not think if we were living much simpler, less complicated (on a mental level, think drama, stress, so much to do, etc...) lives that we would find that same peace of mind and/or happiness, and maybe much more easily?

I agree with you, however, we currently do not exist in such times.

I doubt that is happiness. The money we work for in the systems we live in fund slaughterhouses, prisons, concentration camps, nuclear bombs, wars, lethal injection and all the travesties of suffering we can perpetuate on one planet. That is happiness? Working towards this system with extravagant amounts of money is never anything more than ephemeral relaxation, and then you're back to paranoia, depression, meaninglessness.

We need food, water, shelter and oxygen. That's about it, eh? And money is prerequisite to none of those- it is one option, but not the only one. The fact is that we're too attached to take any other option, myself included, at least at this moment in time. Perhaps we will change as we ride along the geometry of the fourth dimension.
