I'm happy, but not because I like to think about spiritual and philosophical issues.

i'm content... i've touched the extreme end of happiness, coming back sort of leaves you numb. i don't think it's a bad thing though because even though i'm not always happy, i'm not usually sad either.

I'm not really happy or sad,I just AM. I've been going through Major Depression for the last year and I'm totally devoid of all feelings whether good or bad, like an emotional limbo. As most people that have gone through serious clinical depression will tell you, you aren't really sad,you just feel a very profound emptiness. Whether things are going good or bad it doesn't really matter too much to me. Then again, I do have my good days every once in a while.

am I happy with life? yes. life is beautiful
am I happy with my current personal situation in life? no. but I'm planning for change.
am I happy with the current state of the world? absolutely not. and I'm not sure there's anything I can do about it.
did my natural pondering of uncommon things have anything to do with my happiness/unhappiness about the above mentioned things? how should I know?

Everyday I have to think about shit like ethics, spirituality, and how to better myself and then watch the hicks around me say things like "ME BEATS ME WIFE!" "ME HAS PRIMER COLORED CAR!" :frown:  :frown:

I dig Albino Jesus' viewpoint....the term happiness is pretty weak for the importance we put on it...our emotions and realities are much too complex for tossing around a 'yea' or 'nay'...if i personally had to replace the term with only one word it would be contentedness.  i am far from content.
so reversing that term would obviously hold Im far from happy.  More to the gist of your question, I am much more content *because* I have rebeled, read, thought and then some more, abused drugs, traveled, and become a devout psychotropic psychedelic user.  WIthout these things I would still be in potentially nightmarish realites, only less interesting.  Of course we sense great agony and angst behind all our enlightening adventures, but many feel it is a neccessary product of conscious evolution.
Ignorance is bliss only in blissful surroundings, these are not.
Those who claim to be free, and thus happy or fully content, must be in places Ive never seen yet,...the more free I become, the more I see to be attained.  Whatever your thinking is the hard route, its worth it.  The otherside cant be found without hunting down and smashing the doors.  Probable flesh wounds on the splinters, you'll heal further down the road.                   ---Ec0

If it wasn't for the need for money I would be very happy. As it is I am just happy. I feel I have a lot of love in my RW life and there is no substitute for that. My "experiances" are part of what has made me what I am and I am happy with that.

what i found out about happiness is that all the people think happiness is a result of certain situations or things in your life... when believe it is the other way round... certain situations and things appear in your life as a result of you beeing happy... in my eyes... happyness is a choice, not a result...
be the creator of your experiences, not merely a thing that reacts... be cause...

Yes, I would say as a rule I am happy, I prefer the word, 'content', though.

Recently though I lost my account as Mr. Mushrooms which means a lot of important contributions for the Shroomery are gone. My sticky thread which helped people id mushrooms so they wouldn't die or get sick, several nice threads in this forum, and some cool pictures as well.

Err... I think I'm happy. I go through phases. My paradigm for attaining happiness seems to be in a constant flux, so that I don't really know what it is at times. I've got some work to do, but I also realize that I am probably happier than many others out there.

14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
15 That which is crooked cannot be made straight, and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
16 I communed with mine own heart, saying, "Lo, I have come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in the land; yea, my heart had great experience in wisdom and knowledge."
17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. But I perceived that this also is striving after the wind.
18 For in much wisdom is much grief, and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

Yes I'm happy. The saddest day of my life will be the day I have nothing left to learn, so you could say knowledge contributes to me being happy. It's not the only reason, though.

lost soul: I completely agree. Happiness is a choice, and the only thing that will make you unhappy is clinical depression or you letting yourself be unhappy. I'm happy because I wan't to be happy.

There are moments in my life when I am serily happy, then there are days that I am content.. But over all I am a happy person, I look to find good in all the things that I do. When it dose not feel good, I close it like a book. But over all I am happy..

Yes. There is nothing to be gained by wallowing in misery. Happiness is largely a matter of attitude.

Example: I do not fail, I have experiences from which I learn what not to do. I'm happy that I'm smarter now and won't _______ again.

I have found that as I get older, with the right attitude, it gets easier and easier to experience happiness.

Happy with my mental state.  Yes sometimes.  More so if I had less responsiblilty and more time to enjoy life.
Happy with my drugs. Almost, but I need more.
Happy with my place in the Universe.  Absolutely not.  I am a lost soul drifting aimlessly.
Happy with my job.  Oh Fuck NO.  My job makes me want to kill people.
Happy with my home.  No.  Home is a cage.
Happy with the society I live in.  NOOOOOO!!!!  :frown:  Fucking politicians and corporations destroy any happiness not associated with money.  I do not give a fuck about money except that it enables me to do some things that make me happy for short peroids of time.
well counting them up the NO's have it.  So I guess not.  But the drugs help.

Without self-doubt, there would be no desire for improvement.
Without boredom, there would be no motivation.
Without unhappines, there would be no realization of happiness.

It's like the saying "Good can't live without evil".  In a certain series of books of whome I willnot name, there are three gods of magic; Solinari, representing good, Lunitari, representing neutral, and Nuitari, representing evil.  All the mages who have been accepted into the "conclave" (the 'society of magic users') realise that balance must be maintained or else chaos will rain supreme. The white robed (good) wizards do what they do because it a projection of themselves, being good natured and wanting to help. The black robed (evil) wizards do theirs also as a choice of their beliefs. The red robes do theirs as they believe both sides have good points, but realise that balance must be maintained (as well as this is a projection of their personal beliefs).  Without the other two, one would reign supreme and not be contradicted by others with different ideas.  The one being in power would not be challenged by new ideas, and somewhere down the lines someone would make a bad decision as it would not be contradicted.  They realise the balance must be maintained, and so they work together with the common interest being the magic.  Humanity is similar in that we have evil, we have good, and we have people who don't do too much.  The definition is hard to define, as everyone has a different point of view, but in the case of humanity we have numerous interjecting variables (opinions), so one idea is always being replaced by another, whether it be better or not to the bennefit of the species as a whole.  This is why people of power (Bill Gates comes to mind) should NOT be in these positions as it is ONE persons point of view.  Microsoft as an example, they create products based on what THEY think people need. Granted they have some good ideas, but with the understanding that they can lead people on by (metaphorically speaking) flashy graphics, somewhere along the lines personal interest will conflict with unitarial bennefit.

I know that I kind of got off on a rant here, and I planned that when I started as I feel like writing philosophy, but without one, the other wouldn't be recognized as so.

Happiness and unhappiness are relative. There are no constants with emotions, as uncountable variables are constantly updating our central processing unit more commonley known as the brain. Therefor the original post ("Are you happy?") is obsolete (as per my explanation - I'm not saying this peron's post is indefinately obsolete), being that A) no time frame has been specified for the happiness to be judged upon, B) the happiness factor has not been requested from a constant input (life in general, right here right now, current job situation, etc). One can assume the posted meant life in general, but once again there was no specification.

blah. I'mma shut up now. It's bed time.

Bumped for a "brand new" member.  We were talking puppet accounts so I bumped mine.  MutantBobono couldn't find it in the user list.

This.

So you lost your account then got it back?
Or that was one of your puppets that got banned?

My original account was Mr_Mushrooms, registered in June '02.  I was posting in OTD when it vanished and I was unable to get back in.  So I created ElGreco to let website and feedback know about it.  They fixed it and I continued posting.  I left the Shroomery in '04 and had my old account deleted.  I re-registered in May '08 under this name, Mr. Mushrooms.

Now you know "the rest of the story."

I'm very happy. I didn't used to be, but I am now and have been for a while.

I'm good, very fortunate in fact, and yes, my philosophical quest has been the main contributing factor towards my gratitude, contentedness, fulfillment and happiness. I have learned from the best minds, and one does not have to go to school to learn the same thing. Read and contemplate! [Lege et Ora!] Diplomas are for self-esteem and practical job-hunting, not enlightenment.

I am unhappy about aspects of my life and happy about others. I have many more things to be happy about than sad about. Assessing this I make the cognitive judgement that 'I am happy'.
How do you know whether you are happy or not? What if you feel 'OK'? Is that inherently good or bad? happy or sad?

Yes and no

Seems hard sometimes to balance positive and negative perfectly.

It's easy to look at life and imagine how it could be better.

It's hard to be grateful for all the gifts we have been given.

Acceptance seems an important aspect of happiness.

We are here experiencing what we are experiencing.

If I feel unhappy I then question, why? Should I feel this way?

Questions seem endless and unanswerable.

Seems all we can hope to do in the end is master our mind and see what happens from there. The mind seems to be our labyrinth.

Ever a struggle for control against our conditioning.

If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, accept it and move on.

It all begins with the mind.

What helps me sometimes is belief that we are here for a reason. We either chose or are here to learn. Acceptance of the circumstances and responsibility for controlling ones thoughts. If nothing more there are others here and our thoughts and actions impact their experience.

We hold others destinies in our decisions as much as we hold our own.

That is an unquestionable fact and it gives our life purpose.

What then is happiness?

Easing the suffering of others seems some sort of remedy for healing ones self, maybe some things are higher than happiness.

Maybe this, maybe that, where does that leave you?

Meditation seems to be what you are left with, as you are eventually left with no answers, and it's secrets are only revealed by direct experience, if they do exist...

Are you happy now

Emotions rise and fall as swiftly as the breeze

Sit back and watch them

haha.... nothing wrong with that.

so;

to answer these, I would express that these things are energies.

It's as un-normal to me to be moved by them as it is to be moved emotionally by the weather. . .

What I am saying is, I've always had a fairly high degree of equanimity;

But - the beginning point; these are all energies -- the energy of happiness, of peace, of love, of all the others. . . . So, if one is a bit detached from them -- for instance, if one overcomes them so that one is at peace in all circumstances -- i.e., not controlled or swayed by things, -- then one can begin to see how they are energy.

The deepest and purest love, for instance, is calm, cool, refreshing; and it is warm. . . It's there and one can feel it. . . it's worthwhile.

True happiness is along these lines; I give it that moniker TRUE because it's different from . . . . let's say, if some one gets pleasure from hurting others -- I wouldn't call that happiness.

Anyway -- so happiness is an energy; a very healthy and beneficial one;

The opposite is there, too -- this is like, dead zone -- touching it is like, you dip you arm into something which kills all the nerves...

etc.,

So, detachment and cultivating the states contributory to peace, love and joy and so forth...

They can get one there.

Warning: Senior Moment (unaware I just re-responded to a 15 year old post - for the 2nd time)! :foreheadslap:  :banghead:

Dude, [are you even still out there?] how do you give a forum population kudos for being "much mroe educated/intelligent/wise etc than your average joe," and then ask people "please don't lie?' Wisdom does not exist outside of a personality matrix of virtue, integrity, and honor. Education and intelligence can obviously be used in the service of evil (just look at the Ayn Rand, Social Darwinist positions of Republicans, many of whose intellects are colored by philosophies of pathological selfishness and callousness)!

I'm sorry that you are not happy. I was unhappy for 2 decades! From the time I completed undergraduate studies in December 1975 until late in 1996, I had 2 lonely years living in my parents' house again while I hid from the world in a Christian seminary. Then I got into grad school in another state and was just as lonely but far from the familiar. That is why I became quickly engaged to a woman who was cold and as it turned out mentally ill and malevolent. That bad relationship and marriage lasted 13 long years (I had real grounds to leave after the 2nd, but by the 3rd year I should have left when she had a tubal ligation without discussion, I but was too cowardly admit defeat and bail). Biggest 2 mistakes of my entire life: personally and professionally (moving to Florida).

After leaving my marriage my only sibling rejected me when I reached out for emotional support for the first and only time of my life. ¡Adios asshole! One year after divorcing I needed cataract surgery. Four years after divorcing I came down with malignant melanoma, and my mother died. BUT, I also met my current wife of 22 years, and I bought my first house. I kept my position in the 4th largest school system in the US for 27 years til it ran out and I had to retire 3 years early. Happiness commenced just as I survived the cancer and buried my mother at age 43!

I am now 65 and the last 22 years, despite my beloved Dachshund Ben's death, my father's death, and some non-lethal health problems, have been the happiest years of my post-childhood, post-undergraduate life. I've been retired since 2013 and have a pension. Next year will be full Social Security benefits. I hope to live an unusually long life. My father smoked 2-3 packs of ciggies a day for 50 years, was fat and flabby and never exercised and he still lived to 86 but his uncle, my great uncle lived to 106. Hell, I have to make up for lost time being unhappy.

What do YOU have to do to increase your happiness quotient? Happiness is juxtaposed with unhappiness, pleasure with pain, loss with gain. As the Moody Blues put it, life is A Question of Balance. (I hope in the last 15 years you found your happiness  ).

Thanks Enkidu, but it would seem that I had a senior moment the last time I responded to this 15 year old post 8 years ago! :wtf: At least I'm bound to remember it the next time someone resurrects it. I'd delete it, but (1) you responded to it and (2) it took some thinking, so there it is.
