Yeah. I'm going through the same thing with 3 quart jars of birdseed. I removed the tape from the hole in the lid a few days ago, but that didn't seem to help much. My gut feeling is that the birdseed is too dry now. I'm gonna add a bit more water next time and see if that helps.

Chances are that you are having a bacterial bloom in your jars. If there is a minute amount of bacteria in there initially, the mycelium will have the upper hand and grow pretty well since there's more of it, but once you shake the jar the bacteria is spread throughout, and the mycelium can't recover quickly enough to stop the bacteria, which spreads very quickly. I've had a few jars that start off fine, without any visible contamination, and then when I shake them up, everything stops. If you look closely, you might notice that your grains seem slightly wet or greasy looking, which is the telltale sign of bacteria.

Yeah you're right Placebo I gave the jar another day before giving it the sniff test and I almost lost my lunch. I transfered the other jars into trays and am waiting for it to come back before I case it but now I'm kinda confused. Birdseed has sort of a strong odor anyway and I'm not sure if it's infected or not. I'd hate for there to be just enough infection to get fruits that make people sick. Also does anyone know if this is likely caused by too much water in the mix?

Typically when I run into that problem it has been because of too low of a moisture content.I use FP's filter discs...they are great. They have lasted 8 years now...good investment. ------------------ Peace, Love & Light

I've been experimenting with doubled up coffee filters but have yet to invest in the filter disks.

Technically, the only way a jar can go "anerobic" is when the supply of oxygen is cut completely off, and the organisms present use it all up. Anerobic reffers to the lack of oxygen, whereas aerobic reffers to the presence of oxygen.
