Taoism and Christianity similarities
    #6737662 -

Hi, I figure alot of people on here have extensive knowledge of both these areas. I'm writing a paper for East Asian philosophy, and I wanted to try and draw some parellels between the major ideas of Taoism and Christianity. I would like to be able to do this without getting into a mess of different denominations and such...

as an example:
a verse from the bible says "Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth"
a verse from the Tao Te Ching says "The soft and yielding will prevail"

the concept of opposites always existing in each other is a popular idea of taoism. That Good can not exist without Evil to measure it by. Yin and Yang. Similarly, in the christian religion there can not be a heaven without a non-heaven, (hell).

im still just brainstorming the idea, havent done any real research. Does anyone have any ideas, or suggestions for reading materials, books, credible websites ???

Thanks!

I made a thread a bit earlier talking about Jesus and the Tao...

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5949455#5949455

It may be a bit off but the Tao Teh Ching is very subjective.
-----------------------------------------------
Quote:
So I've always been approached by Christians trying to "save" me. And I'm Jewish but don't necessarily go all out during certain events. So I kinda always believed that as long as I believe and am a good person blablabalba then that's just as good as any religion. Then Christians say, "No you need to accept Jesus to remove the impurities of your blood and be saved"

I like explaining stuff scientifically and just being able to back stuff up. Of course there's many events that I can't put reason or seem too good to be true to decypher so I categorize them into godly, devine, fate, supernatural, or the way the universe is acting in harmony with itself. They all are the same in the end depending on what sounds best for whoever you're talking to.

So I read the Tao Te Ching and Chinese characters having these multiple meanings the Tao Te Ching means The Classic Book of the Supreme Reality and its Perfect Manifestation, The Book of the Way and Its Power, The Classic of Tao and Its Virtue.

Whatever you want to call it, it's all the same. So I read this, it's very short like ~60pages of poems but very clear. Not abstract, hard to comprehend philosophy of some moderm philosophers. But I found it amazing where much of it was saying be selfless, have virtue but don't seek it, and then this really got me...

The best way to live
is to be like water
For water benefits all things
and goes against none of them
It provides for all people
and even cleanses those places
a man is loath to go
In this way it is just like Tao

So everything I was told about Jesus ran through my head. In particular Jesus would wash anyones feet, even whores and prostitues, and be spit on and wouldn't care. He was selfless. So Christians say," JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GOD!" And this is my take on it... Jesus is THE WAY to god because Jesus follows The Way(The Tao). And by living as Jesus or accepting him then you are apparently saved. But if you live by The Way and Jesus lives by The Way then you are believing in Jesus. Not by giving your allegiance to any denomination but simply because you believe in The Way. The Tao goes on...

Tao and this world seem different
but in truth they are one and the same
The only difference is in what we call them

I read this and think all religions are the same. Sure they may be different rituals but all in all they are all the same. They are based on The Way of life.

I just think it's wild how this was produced way before the bible. All in all, if you live by Jesus, you are living by the Way... If you live by the Way and I live by The Way then apparently we are one. I never thought of it but that scene in Wedding Crashers where Vince Vaughn is seducing that girl with the "we are all one" talk is completely true.

Words can only describe so well but when you see and feel it then what can describe a feeling more than actually feeling it first-hand?

At one point hell and evil did not exist. The dualism idea of taoism is contradictary to christianity on many levels. One big problem is that it suggests that God is not all powerful, nor can God set things in order.

To suggest that Christ is bound to taoism is also wrong. Christ is God.

The metaphysical realm cannot be bound to science.

People are so concerned about being Christ, where I've heard that Christ would ask people,"what do you think you should do?"

You shouldn't follow Christ, but you should follow his example of being yourself. That's a true Christ believer IMO.

And that's what Taoism is about. Being yourself going with the flow/universe.

If you go against yourself and live a lie, you won't be happy. Set yourself free and fall into the stream of life and begin where you lie in stasis.

I'm starting to feel like I'm preaching my ideals and I apologize if I come off this way but I feel everything resonates from one's self. If I make anyone feel uncomfortable or just weird, please, call me out.

So the apostles, who gave their lives for Christ, were not followers, nor the diciples who followed him around?

Following Christ's example is following his example of perfection. Although it is impossible for man to be perfect, man is to strive to follow Christ's lead.

The word christian was a title given by the romans. It was meant as an insult, but christians accepted it. The word means Christ like.

Being "ourselves" is self-serving and that selfishness goes againt the very fabric of the christian brand. Man is flawed, so being ourselves is not always the best idea. Ever heard of NAMBLA (North American Man/Boy Love Association)?

The Bible says that true freedom can only come from God. It also says that sin is bondage. Check out Paul's epistles.

hrmm maybe then i should do my paper on the similarities between Christianity and Hsun-Tzu.

being yourself is not necessarily "self-serving" either i might add. many people find joy(for themselves) by helping others. aren't all christians primarily concerned with their own soul in the afterlife?

Yeah, I read a little bit of Paul/Saul's epistles. It's a neat story he has but I don't really feel anything from it.

that's funny, I believe true freedom lies in releasing one's self of bondage.

In order to avoid getting your lunch eaten by a professor (if he is liberal- not that thats bad), I would suggest picking up a copy of Living Loud: Defending Your Faith by Geisler & Holden ($9.99). It is a book that has a very comprehensive section on worldviews. Page 74 ha a very simple-to-understand chart on the difference of theim, deism, finite-godism, atheism, pantheism, panentheism, and polytheism. It shows why each worldview is different and not interchangeable.

Sounds like a good paper since some worldviews share some similarities.

Christians, if they are real christians, are to follow the Great Commission. Read Matthew 28:18-20. The churches purpose is 5 fold: evangelism, ministry (service), fellowhip, worship, and discipleship. Nothing self-serving about that. ome people who call themselves christians neglect all of this, and that makes me quetion the authenticity of their salvation (not that I am judging, merely wondering if they understand what they have gotten themselve into).

You have the right to believe what you wish but I have never heard of "free" crackhead, gambling junkie, anarchist, etc. The epistles, like all NT books, has a great deal of philosophy. The ideas of bondage via sin is not unique to religions. Pick up an intro. to psychology book.

I understand what you're trying to convey, and I didn't want to delve further into it because, like your statements, I would have many contradictions and could just go down the list.

there's no such thing as a "free" crackhead, gambling junkie, and anarchist for the crackhead's bondage to crack make him/her a slave to that, as with the gambler and then the anarchist to ideals.

We all suffer or exhibit bondage. Wearing clothes is a form of bondage. Money and one could go down to the basis of where all that stems.

I don't know what an intro to psych book would do for me. I took college intro to psych and feel I understand the basis of things, which is conditioning. I could be wrong, but something always seems to be a precursor to something else...(chain-reaction)

While we're talking about it, you should pick up an organic chemistry book. The way compounds are synthesized and broken down, free radicals and other types of reactions I could form a religion or philosophy based on Chemistry, because 'we' basically are a tremendous myriad of chemical reactions. I could say we're all unpaired electrons who have a greater affinity for some than others based on our 'make-up'. Some people act as catalysts for relationships, wars, and such. Anyhow, I probably am off topic.

Actually you're not off-topic.
It is a fact that we chose our friends, lovers and so on based on who we are on a particular moment... or to be more exact on who we think we are. Or by the limitation our own "real" world has to offer.
For example, if you, becoming aware you are so much more then a doctor, or a forum-poster, or a writer, or a guy who's passionate in movies, fee the need ( as a person who just became more self-aware ) to make contact with a rocket-engineer... I'm pretty sure that the rocket engineer would make the assumption that you wanna learn about his science and nothing more. And in return he would "politely" ask you about movies and art. And if you would start a discussion about... let's say the ocean world he would say something like you're talking to wrong guy, I'm a rocket scientist. :tongue2:
Bondage is everything that defines us.
When we break this circle and become nothing of all that we're free.

The Chinese symbol for Tao means 'head' and 'going,' but Tao is often translated as the 'Way.'

Before Christains were called Christians, they referred to themselves as followers of 'The Way.'

In the words of BE HERE NOW: "It's the same Way! The Way is The Way is THE WAY."

To be "in Christ" is to be living in The Way. Christ represents The Way (to be). It is the interface of the Logos and the higher human mind (nous) or 'spirit' (which is an archaic term for consciousness). Thus, being in Christ is The Way in which a human being can dwell in God.
"It is in God that we live and move and have our being."
– Paul ( Acts 17:28 )

Personally, I believe both Christian and Taoist senses of The Way to be Identical, not merely similar. Fundamentalist Christian mentality cannot grasp that God pre-exists existence itself, and Jesus is included. They seem not to want to concede the actual universality of The Way and unwilling or unable to see The Way - Christ - as transcending the vehicle of Jesus, the 1st century Judean man. No doctrine holds a monopoly on God, or Truth, which from a Christian Biblical perspective are identical:

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." - John 14:6

Yes, through The Way! There is no Jewish carpenter to 'pass through.' The Way is a way of being which is aptly described in the sayings of Jesus, as it is aptly described in the Tao Te Ching.

Re: Taoism and Christianity similarities [Re: MarkostheGnostic]

When Jesus said he was the way, he was speaking of the sacrifice he would make to pay for the sins of mankind. To say this is the same thing as the Taoist way is a stretch. Jesus is making a reference to the mosaic law and OT prophecy. The mosaic law (in a nutshell) says that you must not break any laws in order to get to heaven. Later on it says that no one can live up to the law, so everyone is screwed. After that we are told of a Messiah who would pay the price -make the sacrifice- for mankind. Hence the way.

BTW: Jesus probably was not a carpenter. He probably worked with stone more than anything. New archeological finds sseem to make this the most likely thing. A handy man is probably the most appropriate term. It's kinda like the Mary M. was a whore thing.

I don't know any fundementalist (if you do, slip him a magic brownie), but I can tell you that protestants and catholics alike believe in an eternal and infinite trinity. Genesis makes this clear when God speaks to himself in a pluralistic sense (Gen. 1:26). Elohim is a plural form of God. This stuff is basic Christian doctrine. Look at John 8:57-58.

Act 17:28 means that God is sovereign and in control, while at the same time he is close and personal. If you do an exegetical study on the sermon of Mars Hill, I think you will find something a little different than what you mentioned.

BACK TO THE "WAY"

John 3:3 (NASB)
Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."
