The Tao Te Ching and Jesus
    #5949455 - 08/10/06 12:36 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

So I've always been approached by Christians trying to "save" me.  And I'm Jewish but don't necessarily go all out during certain events.  So I kinda always believed that as long as I believe and am a good person blablabalba then that's just as good as any religion.  Then Christians say, "No you need to accept Jesus to remove the impurities of your blood and be saved"

I like explaining stuff scientifically and just being able to back stuff up.  Of course there's many events that I can't put reason or seem too good to be true to decypher so I categorize them into godly, devine, fate, supernatural, or the way the universe is acting in harmony with itself.  They all are the same in the end depending on what sounds best for whoever you're talking to.

So I read the Tao Te Ching and Chinese characters having these multiple meanings the Tao Te Ching means The Classic Book of the Supreme Reality and its Perfect Manifestation, The Book of the Way and Its Power, The Classic of Tao and Its Virtue.

Whatever you want to call it, it's all the same.  So I read this, it's very short like ~60pages of poems but very clear.  Not abstract, hard to comprehend philosophy of some moderm philosophers. But I found it amazing where much of it was saying be selfless, have virtue but don't seek it, and then this really got me...

The best way to live
    is to be like water
For water benefits all things
and goes against none of them
It provides for all people
    and even cleanses those places
a man is loath to go
In this way it is just like Tao

So everything I was told about Jesus ran through my head.  In particular Jesus would wash anyones feet, even whores and prostitues, and be spit on and wouldn't care.  He was selfless.  So Christians say," JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GOD!"  And this is my take on it...  Jesus is THE WAY to god because Jesus follows The Way(The Tao).  And by living as Jesus or accepting him then you are apparently saved.  But if you live by The Way and Jesus lives by The Way then you are believing in Jesus.  Not by giving your allegiance to any denomination but simply because you believe in The Way.  The Tao goes on...

Tao and this world seem different
but in truth they are one and the same
The only difference is in what we call them

I read this and think all religions are the same.  Sure they may be different rituals but all in all they are all the same. They are based on The Way of life.

I just think it's wild how this was produced way before the bible.  All in all, if you live by Jesus, you are living by the Way... If you live by the Way and I live by The Way then apparently we are one.  I never thought of it but that scene in Wedding Crashers where Vince Vaughn is seducing that girl with the "we are all one" talk is completely true.

Words can only describe so well but when you see and feel it then what can describe a feeling more than actually feeling it first-hand?

Anyhow that's my two cents.  comments welcomed.

It's definitely a logical argument

No person/creature or action benefits all things. Seems abstract thus far.

Water should be like water and a man should be like a man. Thus spake Shmoopy.

Yeah.

That's exactly what it is.

Who or what are you arguing with?

"Not abstract, hard to comprehend philosophy..."

One of us has a reading comprehension problem.

I stand corrected...

Have you read the Tao Te Ching, OC? Do you have an opinion on it that is not reactionary?

I don't mean this to be a "personalism," if it looks like one. I'm just curious.

I read it many years ago, but found it to be comparable to a Rorschach ink blot. You layer your own meaning onto the words. To me a guide that does not guide is not a guide.

"Be like water."  I remember Bruce Lee saying that.  It can not be broken and can form to any container without effort.

That's a decent comparison. It really isn't much as a guide, but I would still say its abstractions are a lot more personally enriching than a Rorschach test.

But that's just me, it may not be your cup of tea.

Bullshit. Bruce Lee never died. He's hanging out with Carlos Castaneda down in the Sonoran desert...Jesus pops in on them occasionally to smoke a bowl.

"A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

I think this is the point.  The Tao, as with any art, lights your way by illuminating yourSELF.  Same as any interaction with another being.

--------------------
Jumped in a river, what did I see?
Black eyed angels swimming with me
Moon full of stars and astral cars, all the figures I used to see
All my lovers were there with me
All my past and all my futures
We went to heaven in a little rowboat
There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

My mind turns to mush when I read any book on philosophy, Eastern or Western.  The Tao has always sounded like the riddles Hercules had to solve, and I am not very good with ancient riddles.  I applaud and respect anyone who dedicates themselves to a code of ethics and morals.  I lump all Religions in the same group, all of them has good and bad, all of them are hypocrites.  Some of the Eastern philosophy sounds very good, but then you realize that India is one of the most racist and violent countries in the world. I generally discard any message tainted by money or ego.  There are too many people trying to tell me how I should think, all of them will condemn me if I am not sympathetic to their ideas.  Your water analogy of course would only be true here on earth.  Anywhere else and it would be a gas or solid.-----------------------------------------------Have you ever read Zoroastor.

This post has nothing to do with Tao Te Ching. The book has little if anything to do with morals, it's more about acting effectively. It also came from China, not India. And it doesn't tell you how to think.

Or perhaps this is just an example of me taking what I want from it?

It's a very simple and stimulating read.

When I read it forty years ago it was a five minute pop-culture fad, and I moved on.  I was trying not to be specific, and tried to convey an idea in general terms.  I was not attacking you, I thought you may be open to exchanging ideas on this subject.  You obviously want to argue specifics about this book, it was not my intention to anger you with my ideas.
