I am in the first stages of my own experiment, and have found that a simple solution is this: I went to the local Lowe's and Wal Mart, and got a clamp lamp. This is nothing more than a 120 volt (typical urban socket) lamp plug with a metal reflector and spring clamp attached. Ir ran about 5 dollars. I also invested in a digital thermometer/hygrometer which I keep on the floor of my terrarium. I have found the ideal distance to be about 2 feet with a 60 watt bulb. There are many different wattages (power=heat) available, so experiment and see what works for you.
