you can get a cheap thermometer for $2 at a hardware store. if you can't afford that, then you have bigger problems.

I definitely plan on buying a thermometer as soon as possible but in the mean time I want my cakes to have optimum temperature. I'm totally broke right now. I do have bigger problems though.

ok, maybe that was a little harsh. You can leave your jars at room temp, and the mycelium will still grow, just much more slowly. If you are scared of overheating, then that's what I would suggest. You can always start heating them later when you can afford a thermometer.
