My New Incubator!
    #3764131 - 02/10/05 10:04 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I recently decided that I needed a new incubator. Being the thrifty person that I am, I went down to the thrift store to rummage for cheep parts!

Here is what I came up with, Total cost $10!

NOTE: I used the thermometer from the old incubator so there was no cost in getting it. With the thermometer it would have been $20!

While at the thrift store I came across one of the self cooling ice chests. The kind you plug into the car lighter.

These units use a Thermoelectric module to cool the inside of the ice chest. You can find more info on  Thermoelectric Modules by clicking on those words

These modules are DC and cool on one side while heating on the other. Reverse the DC lines and presto! It heats on the inside and cools on the outside

The first thing I did was to test the unit and make sure it worked!

Once I was sure it would work I mounted the thermometer to the top (Now the door) of the unit.

I just put a screw into the plastic and mounted the unit the same way you would mount it to the wall.

I them used a hot glue gun to attach the temperature probe line to the out side of the unit. I will put the probe in through the back.

Once the probe was around back of the unit I punched a hole in it using a screwdriver.

I then pushed the probe through the hole.

I used the hot glue gun to fill in the hole and secure the temperature probe to the back of the incubator.

I just rolled up the extra cable and taped it to the back of the unit

I needed a power supply for it (I am not growing in the car ) A computer power supply puts out 12v DC at 4 amps. That should work fine.

I cut off one of the power connectors (the one for the floppy drive) and stripped back the red and black wires ( +12VDC line and Ground)
Then attached them to the cable that connects to the unit.

I made sure to tape them up good. No need to short out a good unit

4 hours later the unit is up to full temperature! It looks about right. If I have any problems with the temp ill hook up a standard timer and set the timer to cut off the unit and let it cool off.

I hope everyone enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed making it

As it sits the unit will easily hold 12 to 14 1 pint jars.

Thanks,

My old incubator was a plastic tub, Mylar blanket, and a heat rock from my (Deceased) snakes cage. It kept the temp about 5 to 6 degrees higher than the room temp.

It worked and was made of stuff from around the house, but, once winter set in it just did not keep up with the cold temps.

I was just looking at the new $50.00 mini fridges today... Same process for heating and cooling, except you get a fancy thermostat to set instead of the normal on/off hot/cold...

The new ones are about twice as efficient, (Though still energy hogs.)

Major coolness... just flip a switch and you can go from incubate, right to cold shock!

12v at 6amps (Make sure you are not stressing your CPU power supply. ) Yours may have 10a - 12a @ 12v... if it is older.

I thought I got a cool deal when I found that yogurt incubator at the salvation army thrift store! (I did see a cool powered hand chopper, instead of killing my blender!)

hey man you consider putting a switch in the lines to be able to switch it from cooling to heating... you would have by the flick of a switch a incubator / cold shock fruiting chamber :-) looks cool man

I checked the unit rating, It claims a 4a draw. I am also keeping an eye on the Power supply and power supply temp. It is an old AT power supply so it should be fine.

You have to love thrift store finds!

I found one of these too, a kenwood yogurella, comes with 6 glass jars. Are you using yours? Did you have to modify it? what are the temps?
