WBS/RYE moisture content

Rye/Milo/Millet mix.
36 hour soak, no simmer.
Was well rinsed dry, before the soak.


Rinse with scalding HOT water.
Stirred several times.

After rinsing, let drain about 1.5 hours.
Stirred it every ten minutes, or so.
To bring wetter grains topside, to air dry.


Ready to load.:grin:
Note, no bright moisture sheen.
You can pick up a handful.
And, VERY little sticks to your hand.

what's the ratio of millet/rye/milo you use? do you feel that's a good spawn as far as price goes? great pictorial as usual :thumbup:

Wbs is the cheapest spawn.

PetsMart --> 40lb bag @ $8 BIRDBASIC brand.

I also buy rye in 50 lb bags from feed stores.
Sometimes millet and/or Milo in 50 lb bag.
Just depends on whats on sale.

I just mixed about 60% rye, 30% Milo & 10% millet for this batch.
From bags just laying around that were about empty.

Best spawn is what you can get easy, at a good price.
That works. Wbs is my old soldier.

I prefer a MIX of seed/grain.
It's more forgiving, moisture content wise.
Some hydrate more (rye), some less (Milo)& you get a balance.

Its very important not to load jars with wet wbs Agar taught me this.. It helps increase colonization rate when its properly done.


Also if you use poly fill use smaller holes than 1/4 inch or the top drys out.. Tyvek should cure this problem (haven't tested it yet but will next batch) Also put a rack or somthing to keep jars from touching bottom... It will scorch the seed on bottom somewhat and it will not colonize..

I cannot put a rack in my pc because its just right for 4 quarts.. So my bottoms don't colonize :frown:

That is why, about every 2nd or 3rd batch of wbs/grain.
I post the info again, with whatever I'm doing at the moment.

But, possibly there should be a small section placed in the FAQ.
About Wbs/Grain moisture content & how to get it in right range.
Since the question comes up 150 times a week.

I know wbs is the cheapest. I was just wondering if you felt like the mix you made up was better or if there was something better for around the same price range.

Rye is optimal.
That is what commercial spawn makers use.

Millet is also used worldwide.

Milo (sorghum) is used in most 3rd world countries.

Millet is tiny, thus creates more substrate contact points.
Milo is bigger & tougher, lasts longer as a delayed nutriant.
Rye is rich in nutriants & colonizes quickly.

On that basis, probably 1/3rd each, would be about optimal.
(my opinion only).

On a price basis;
Wbs (usualy millet/milo mix) supplimented with about 20% rye.
Would be about the best bang for the buck.

I have more than a few posts by you book marked and I do believe that some of the hints for getting your moisture right will prove to be of the most use.I may even be daring and give birdseed another go(I am lucky to get bird seed right half the time) I would love to have consistent results with bird seed seeing as all I usually use is rye and I don't live in the sticks where I can go to a feed store,I have to have them special order it from the hippie organic market and 10 times the price of birdseed

I have said it a million times but seriously Agar :yourock:

I could still find feed stores that sold rye cheap.

Lol, I ALWAYS seem to soak more grain than 1 PC will hold.
Filled the 941.
But, had grain left over.
So, I loaded 7 more jars & ran the 925 alongside the 941.

Result being about a quart of grain left over.
Which I threw in the backyard.
So, the 40 quail that visit every morning.
Will have breakfast.:tongue:

That's a link that has feed stores around the country. I would've never known that the feed store I get my rye from now even existed before this link. It's good stuff.

Don't some people put a wet towel underneat the jars to help w/ this?  I dunno, my cooker only fits 4 quarts and nothing underneath and they didn't burn?  Maybe cuz it's only 10 psi.  I cooked 12 rye jars w/ my 10psi mirro cooker and got no contams  and no burnin on the bottom so /shrug i dunno.
