Moisture Content of Staw
    #1403435 - 03/23/03 02:54 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

After I pastureize wheat straw and get ready to innoculate it with spawn jars, what should the moisture content be and how can I check this?

If you pasteurize straw for 1 hour at 160-170?F and then let it drain over night, the water content will be just right.

TMC says that straw should be pre-soaked to a moisture content of approximately 75% before pasteurization, but my friend has not a clue how to check it.

My friend doresn't pre-soak. He pasteurizes his straw in a pillow case and then just lets it drain overnight on a rack above the sink or by hanging it on a fence outside. When he adds the spawn, the straw feels kind of damp but not wet. He says he's actually had the best results when the straw seemed a bit on the dry side.

Hmm...are you sure about that?

you want it wet, but not so wet that water accumulates in the bottom of the casing tray .
use the gentle squeeze test as you would for making a casing .
if you're adding poo, same thing .

ic....

We are talking on 2 different methods here though.
What you say is
1. presoak
2. steam fro 2-4 hours at 140-150?F.

What I talk about, without presoaking, is a hot water bath at 160?F-170?F for 1 hour.

You're right.

When my friend saw the presoaking statement he assumed it applied to both methods. In the hot water submersion paragraph the author makes no mention of presoaking.

Wise guy...

after pasteurisation I stick the bag into cold water with a dash of h202 to cool it down, then toss it in the washing machine on high spin for a few minutes.
seems to work well, and no draining overnight is good if you're in a hurry;)
