Stress
    #6731083 -

Anyone have any ways for me to deal with my stress that don't cost any money...? My life has really sucked lately.

#1 Meditation practice
This has helped me tremendously. The effects are not immediate, but when they come they’re more than worthwhile. Read this free book for more
http://www.vipassana.com/meditation/mindfulness_in_plain_english.php

#2 Running or any other type of intense aerobic exercise
Clinical studies show that running, at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes, work as well against anxiety and depression as typical anti-depressants do. If you’re new to running start slow or you will get fed up with it and quit. Do a Google search on how to start.

#3 Diet
Clean up your diet. Avoid all simple carbs, sugars (including alcohol) and especially caffeine.

#4 Long walks in nature
Take long walks in nature. They’re extremely calming and healthy.

#5 Structure
When our lives seem to come down to pieces, structure is something we can rely on to help us get through. Write down your plan for each day and follow it religiously day after day after day. Wake up at the same time, exercise at the same time, eat and work at the same time and go to bed at the same time. If you lack goals, make and follow them.

That’s about it. Those are the things that have helped me the most. I hope they’ll help you too.

Good luck. You’ll make it!

Hmmm... I don't know what issues are making your life stressful so I can't be precise, but I think that taking a close look at those that are around you can do wonders. Maybe you hang out with people that are not compatible with you so you need to re-analyze all your relations and act in consequence.

redtailedhawk hit all the important ones.. you really need all that stuff. IMO meditation does not have to be anything formal, simply a space in your life where you can just chill and let your mind be weightless. when i'm waiting for a ride somewhere, i chill out on my front steps for like 10 minutes and just watch the rooftops and trees on the horizon.

carry a water bottle around everywhere and sip off it all day. ive just started doing this and for some reason it makes me feel more complete.

study something. whether it be through school or independently, learn about something. it is really enriching to the mind to explore the ways of the world and people. but maybe this is not for everybody... i am studying Ancient Greek and Roman Art right now, and it's still hard for me to pick up the book but when i do I find myself throroughly immersed in another world.

i would also recomend weightlifting and/or martial arts but that's not for everyone either.

oh yea ever tried Landscaping? enhancing properties out in the sun all day can really make you feel good and tired, and might solve your money problems.

Evaluate what things are causing the stress, and determine which of those sources you can live without and eliminate them. It's not the difficulty of the problems, it's the overwhelming feeling of too many problems.

I know everybody knocks "self-help" books in this forum, but this book saved my life. It's 100 very simple, non-mystical techniques for reducing stress. It changed the way I related to life and its problems.

Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man.  For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire.  Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it.

The Body Scan is easy to learn and great on stress. It's a form of meditation I guess. You lie or sit somehwere comfortable and as quiet as possible. Starting with your toes on the left foot, breath down into them and feel as much as you can of them. Once you have fully felt as much as you can move to the soul of your foot. Then top of foot, then ankle, calf, knee, thigh, groin, stomach and on and on feeling every part of yourself. After doing this for a week or so you may find yourself floating in your body totally relaxed. Keep this up every day at least once. It takes about 45 mins to one hour.

Redtail has the steps down there for coping. I would only add one more thing. It sounds really simple, but you have to find the source of your stress. People, situations, whatever is causing your stress and eliminate the cause. Start with somthing simple and just fix one thing at a time. Just remember that anything can be changed if you want to bad enough.

i am dreaming within fragile skin... waiting for a brighter flame to wake within

i agree with redtailedhawk, get a lot of exercise. the more you run, the better you feel. nootropics are supposed to work well too, but you have to find the right combination. green tea is also awesome. i find coffee to be too stimulating for my mind and that creates some stress. rhodiola rosea is good too. and music!!
