I have been experimenting with no bottom layer and a coco coir casing. It is working very well so far. No contams, and the mycelium loves the stuff. In the past I have done 50/50 verm/peat with a bottom layer, and almost every tub fell victim to some kind of contamination eventually. I always got at least one flush in the tubs using the 50/50 with the bottom layer. Of course, it could be because of human error. If you are going to do a bottom layer, use vermiculite. Personally, I think the bottom layer is a waste of time.

I've been using 50/50 verm and peat mixture on the bottom layer. Been sterilizing the mix in a microwave first, then spraying with H2o as I spread it in the pan. Haven't had any conams down there yet. I also haven't tried it without this layer, so I can't say it works better than anything else. You might as well try it.

A thin layer of unsterilized coir seems to be contam resistant, while offering a secondary water source for the mycelium......

Sometimes there's no ONE right answer :-)
