bottom layer

I plan on using old timers straw tek. Should I have a layer of moist vermiculite under the straw? If so, why?

It's not required, but it can be an advantage. The verm will give added moisture to the substrate if it is needed, and if the straw has too much moisture it will drain into the verm away from the substrate preventing decay and posible contamination. Any drained liquid will be held in the verm and only used if it's needed.
