Top layer casing material??
    #783533 - 07/29/02 07:07 AM (21 years, 10 months ago)

OK, FRIENDS

Thought i saw a post, some one said the top layer of casing
shouldnt have any nutritional value? not shure, have tried just verm
an seemed to suffocate the case? so then went to dung top layer.
Pins seem to form better with dung? Also have tried peat with suffocation
problems? Only put about a quarter inch layer on top tried not to over water
but still the mycellium doesnt like verm or peat in my oppinion. have had some
good success with bulk projects, but most of the pinns come from the sides??
Looking to get more even pins across the hole tray!!! ANY TIPS????PLEASE.

you shouldnt have much probs with any of those casing materials. you are probably over watering. this will def. sufffocate the casing.

Are them questions or statements?

Pinsets are controlled by an evenly applied casing layer and even colonization of the casing layer. Patch case if necassary.

The only problem I have with verm on the top layer is that the mushies get really dirty, and that crap is a bitch to wipe off. Does anyone else experience this? Peace,
Pharmette

I usually wipe off as much verm. as I can without damaging the shrooms and then drying them. After they are cracker dry, I scrape off as much of the rest as possible using a toothpick. Anything left I ignore and eat.

I wouldnt recomend a verm casing layer. Verm is difficult to judge moisture content, you cant look at it and tell. Try some coir and verm. Coir does dry out really fast but it can be controlled much easier. The moisture in your casing layer is crucial for max fruiting, therefore it must be kept at optimal moisture content. Mycelium also rips through this shit like no other.
