Sterilization of Casing Material; 50/50+

Ive heard both
1. Its necessary to sterilize
2. Its not necessary

My problem is I dont have a pressure cooker, is there an alternative to sterilize the material? A friend told me 10 mins on high in mocrowave is enough, what do you guys recommenD?

Yeah use the microwave for 10 mins

When you patch a casing, how does this allow the other areas to "catch up" and when do you know it is actually "caught up?

some areas of your casing will breakthrough your casing layer before other areas. You might patch those areas so the other areas will come up roughly around the same time, in order to get a nice even pin set. You will know it is coming up at the same time because you will see it all coming up at the same time. If you don't patch and wait for other areas to catch up, you risk overlay on those areas you did not patch. Some do, some don't, depends on your personal feeling and how far behind other areas are. My poo finished colonization this sunday. Is there a certain time when casing should be applied or when the colonized substrate will go "bad"?

its best to case as soon as the substrate is fully colonized. The longer you wait once its fully colonized the more nutrients are wasted on vegative growth that could be used to produce fruitbodies.

i toss mine together in GLAD oven bags, then i put em in the oven on 300 for 1:30, it dries it out a little bit, but i just add some more water, then squeeze it out, and apply it.

I also have had very bad contams whenever I did not sterilize my 50/50+

I think the oyster shells carry some green, or something.
