truffle (?) ID request
    #6702545 -

hey yall.. okay.. ive read all of the forum rules   and ive searched and searched through threads looking to see if there was already an anwnser to my quandry.. ive found alot of fungus here in my travels.. i have located some things that look like truffles? im not entirely sure.. i have never really hunted before.. these are dark orange, they resemble the skin of an orange. if  you hold it up, there is one straight edge.. such as this

the rest of it is a light curve, the fungus looks basically like a capital D, its about 2 inches across on the flat side, then tapers off to about half an inch on the curved side .. it is orange on the top, and underneath a very dark orange, i live in florida and i found it growing on a downed scrub oak.. im not sure if these are good, i doubt it, but i figure i'd ask the experts.. i dont even know if these are truffles, for all i know they could just be poisonous crap, which im sure they are  just wondering if there are orange truffles in existance that are actually edible.. thanks for your time

Truffels grow underground and please read the rules regarding a id request. You have to be more specific in your description.

It's hard to say without a picture, but by the sounds of your description it may be a truffle. Tuber canaliculatum is a possibility, but it's really hard to say without a picture of the specimen. Try google searching for images of Tuber canaliculatum to see if they look alike. Good luck.

As far as I know, truffles also grow under deciduous trees.

Well, I know about 6 species of truffles occur naturally in The Netherlands, so I'd say it's possible they occur in the Eastern US as well (at least, in zones where winters aren't too harsh). However, I'm not familiar with the distribution of tuber species in the US.

Btw, there are definitely species of truffle that associate with the Douglas fir, such as the Oregon white truffle, as this page by Tom Volk illustrates. Other species, such as the red truffle (tuber rufum) usually associate with species like oak and hazelnut.

you may have some ground dwelling tuber, but probably not a truffle. dont eat it right away or anything.

The fungus I shot out there as a starting point for you is found in Florida. Along with all of the other Gulf coast states as well. I'm curious to see if you indeed have something good there.

Perhaps the Orange Peel Fungus, Aleuria aurantia.

I'd hope Aleuria aurantia and a truffle couldn't be confused. lol

Truffles do not grow in the South-East U.S. They are found primarily in Europe and parts of Asia, and are known to grow in the PNW of North America. Finding a true truffle in Florida would be a strange anomaly.
