Ego-Dissolution
    #6687187 -

I've recently discovered that ego-dissolution may well be a big pile of excrement.

Dissolving our ego would mean that we would not function properly on the relative, as our ideas of 'self' are functional aspects that serve as useful and not damaging when we can understand there real nature.

It seems more like it is our ego-clinging that results in suffering, not the actual formations themselves. Its not as if there is some ego to be gotten rid of, like it is some big problem that we must struggle with. Its seems more that we need to recognize that our thoughts, emotions and ideas of self are actually devoid of the permanent independent-existing qualities that we assign to them with our grasping attitudes.

Problems only seem to arise in relation to ego when we don't understand the transparent, transient quality of our ideas of self. In reality, these idea seem to be just temporary arisings, empty of our mistaken idenitifications.

This way perhaps, if we can relax, let go, and not bring any strong identification with our emotions, thoughts and actions, they might be given the space to naturally arise and subside continually as they are, without any difficulty at all.

'zactly!!!

Just as it is not desire itself that causes suffering, but the craving and grasping after that desire, it is not the ego structure which limits us, but our own errors in creating said structure.

The ego (IMO) is meant to be flexible, flowing, adaptable, helpful & aligned with our values.  When it becomes (in our minds) rigid, resistant, single-minded & imprisoning, we are condemned by our own creation.

Taking ourselves lightly is k3y.

I agree, but one's really got to see it for what it is. Truly experience it as a selfless and empty formation. Simply knowing or stating that the self-concept is selfless, empty, and transient won't cut it IMO.

For sure, and that is the difference between conceptual knowledge and direct, non-conceptual knowledge. it takes nothing but a bit of conceptual learning to know the former, while it requires diligence and practice to know the latter.

OK,
seems good
this view should be fortified

(however, the first line can be edited, since the whole post is really all about ego-transcendence - the actual meaning of it, and it is not excrement - feh!)

Re: Ego-Trancendence [Re: redgreenvines]

That depends upon your definition of "transcend":

1. To pass beyond the limits of: emotions that transcend understanding.
2. To be greater than, as in intensity or power; surpass: love that transcends infatuation. See Synonyms at excel.
3. To exist above and independent of (material experience or the universe).

IMO, Sinbad is talking about disbelieving def. 3, as opposed to aiming for def. 1. Perhaps purusing def. 3 keeps us locked within the limits & prevents ego-transcendence as per def. 1?

Not really Veritas. I do believe that the limits of the physical universe can be transcended at the time of death, but that is a little off the topic of this discussion.

You're correct red, i should have entitled the thread, 'ego-dissolution' perhaps rather than ego-transcendence, as this is more of what i was referring to.

Do you believe that the ego survives death??  I see the ego as our "tour guide" within material existence, and thus not linked to the "tourist" or experiencer.  Perhaps when we have finished with our "tour" we do transcend this plane.

Guess we'll have to wait and see!

I believe that our notions we have accumulated about ourselves die with death, but our ingrained habitual tendencies for identification with a 'self' continues, hence rebirth.

I believe it's back into the soup. Then it gets stirred and served elsewhere.

Thats pretty much what i meant actually. The 'stirring' is the ego-grasping that keeps serving us portions of our infinite accumulations of karma. This leads us to be 're-birthed' according to circumstances (emotional/mental state at the time of death, actions in the intermediate state, etc).

I actually bought a book on this subject the other day, but haven't got round to reading it yet. Its called "Death, Intermediate State and Rebirth in Tibetan Buddhism" by Lati Rinpoche and Jeffery Hopkins.

Looks to be a very detailed and interesting read.

i like to think of it as ego expansion... becoming our higher self, higher awareness... having the ability to see thoughts and not become them. similar to what Veritas said, it depends on the definition as well. may it be that there are different levels of ego, the lower part being the one that perceives and attaches us to the material/mind world, and the higher that allows us to perceive the spiritual/energy world?

i believe if we have fully realized our higher self, and have become it here on earth, it could be our vehicle after death which would allow us to transcend the cycles of reincarnation that exist within our egoic self.

It may be what you mean but it's not what I mean.

No more nothing. Every part, personality, soul, spirit, body, aura, essense, etc., breaks up, never to be again. Carlo's concept of Nagual is what I'm talking about. Now I don't believe it all just disolves into nothing. It all breaks up into the component parts that came together to form that life. It's the never ending ebb and flow of the Tao. No purpose other than to be.;)

The topic says ego transcendence, then you talk about dissolving the ego. Which is it? I suggest reading some of Ken Wilber's ideas, particularly regarding the pre-/trans- fallacy. To transcend the ego is not to destroy it, but to see beyond it.

Yes, like i wrote to red in a previous post, i should've changed the subject name. I think ill go do that now actually.

I can't say that i am a very big fan of Ken Wilber's though, to be honest.
