my ideas on straw and my failure.
    #6686802 -

it has been a while since a grow. I need to read up on all the new faqs and such but I'd like to discuss my previous grow briefly and see if my thoughts are grounded.

I incubated four jars per tub and had a great turn out of fully colonized rye seed jars. Next I mixed four jars per tub (for a speedy colonization) of straw bought at michaels which I cut into small pieces and pasteurized. I coated the top of the mix with 50/50 coco coir and vermiculite. I let it incubate until i felt the casing mix looked finished and I initiated fruiting. I was overwhelmed with the pinset I got. There were hundreds and hundreds of them. Unfortunately, only a small subset of them actually grew. This same experience happened across 3 different tubs. I'll include a picture of one of them.

My thoughts are that perhaps the straw I bought was coated with some kind of plastic or preservative to keep it from rotting? It was probably intended for decoration, which inhibited the mycelium from using it as food. This would force the mycelium to use only the four jars of rye seed scattered across the tub as nurishment across a very large surface area... making it unable to support so many pins.

What I'd like to hear is some kind of reassurance that if I switched to, say shit, and kept every thing else constant, this nice pinset i got would stay alive. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I doubt the straw was bad, but I've picked all sorts of trash out of the straw from michaels so I figured they probably rake it up from construction sites or something....

Most likely they failed due to another reason.  Starving for air exchnage or overmisting are common causes of aborts.

However, when you see a massive pinset, it's completely normal for only a small percentage to grow.  Pins for the first two or three flushes are often set at the time of first flush, then they don't grow until you harvest the first flush and their time comes.  Many growers mistake these for aborts and pick them off, ruining the later flushes.  Remember, if the heads don't turn black, they haven't aborted and are just sitting dormant until it's their turn.

Straw alone is a poor substrate.
Often a 1 flush wonder.
Most straw sold in little bales, is ALFALFA.
Not, WHEAT STRAW.

Straw should be COMPOSTED.
To break down it's waxy coating.
Which allows it to hold more moisture.

I would bet, as it began to pin......
The substrate went far below optimal moisture content.
Which caused pins to stall.

Switch to weather aged h/poo..............
(free, if possible)

And, you will have FAR BETTER LUCK.

mushroom compost is spent substrate from commercial grows, it has already been sucked of his nutrients and is not suitable for growing mushies.  I have heard it works really great for growing outdoor pot though   testing this in a few months...

You can also use a mixture of 50/50 mix of straw/horse manure. Or just manure Straight.

ok i've gotten hooked up with a source for as much horse manure that i want.

Would mixing it with vermiculite be fine? It seems the straight shit would be too dense to allow mycelium growth.

I just got this nice looking drawer/shelf setup and i can't wait to test it out

looking forward to this 'shit'

hmm... after checking out your stuff cryo, that substrate looks excellent...

If it was straight cow shit, then it's recommended to mix it with something to fluff it. A cow's digestive system is much much more refined than a horse. If you've ever seen a horse poo nugget, most of the time it just looks like grass that's very compacted. Once leached, straight horse poo is used as is.

It's manure, not shit, and once it's been properly field aged, it's good to go after pasteurization. No leaching required. Be sure to pick up well aged nuggets from the pasture, not the stable sweepings that often have cedar chips mixed in to control odor.
