You didn't screw up. It doesn't matter which way you birth the cakes, the shroomies will grow upward towards the light source, however most people birth them bottom of the jar facing up. If you put them directly on the perlite, they will absorb moisture from it, possibly getting too wet. Someone here said recently that they thought tinfoil reflected the light and caused the shrooms to grow downward. Never tried it - the shrewmen use plastic lids from small margarine containers.

ya, bottom of the jar side up, my shrooms grow out of the top of that usually, i have the in tin pans set in piles of sterile damp verm i'd set them in the pans alone, but the sterile damp verm holds the cakes from falling over and allows them to spread like roots and grow out of that too

I say flip em! Its only been 3 days that they have been fruiting, it wont effect it. But if you left them like they are the bottom side would pinn and all your mush would be under the fruiting cake...

Stand them on thier sides, balanced on a small canning jar ring, a 1/4 pint ring which is smaller and will keep the cake elevated a bit thereby allowing fresh air flow all around it.
You can adjust the cake when you see the pins forming and position it so that they get maximum growth room.
I suggest you case your cakes with damp verm for bigger, better flushes.

I say leave 'em. When they start to pin, check underneath, if they have a lot of pins there, flip em, no harm done.
This applies to all birthed cakes.
Good luck

FD3000: Have you read the "Simple Cubensis Growing TEK"?? Here is what it says about birthing:
Birthing the Cakes
Once a cake is completely covered in white mycelium, wait at least 1-2 more weeks before taking the cake out of the jar. When you are ready, and in a fairly clean room, begin transferring the cakes from their jars into their fruiting chamber (described in the next step). Remove the lid of each jar, and dump out the dry vermiculite on top. Then, remove the aluminum foil seal and put the lid back over the top of the jar. Slowly turn the jar upside down, so that the cake is resting on the jar lid. You may need to gently tap the jar to knock the cake loose. Take the jar off the top of the cake and then carefully pick up the cake and turn it over, so it is sitting right side up on the lid. It is very important that the cake is fruited in the same orientation (with the same side up) as it had when it was incubating. If it is turned over during birthing, it will try to fruit from the original "top" side of the cake, even if this side is now facing down. This is bad, because the mushrooms can?t grow correctly from the underside of the cake, and you will grow very few mushrooms. Leaving the cake sitting on the jar lid, put them both into the fruiting chamber. Once all the cakes have been transferred, you?re ready to induce fruiting.
Seems pretty clear to me. *shrug* I plan on keeping them verm-side up...that's how they're sitting in the incubator.
Love & Light,
Boppity
