Re: what's better for casing?

My experience has been that you delay your crop for 2 to 4 days if you crumble them up. I have also observed that if I crumble them and therefore spread the substrate thinner, my shrooms are more abundant, but smaller. To each his own, but I crumble them. The xtra few days is no worry.

crumbling causes even flushes, while uncrumbled will flush uneven, bigger, yet fewwer shrooms... over multiple flushes it all ='s out.....

Personally I like the crumbled best,

Crumbling is better for larger yeilds. When I case, I put 1" of a 50/50 pre-moistened potting soil/vermiculite mixture in a 12" x 12" tray. Then I put three 1/2 pint jars of crumbled 100% colonized cakes on top in an even layer. Then I add three 1/2 pint jars of sterilized substrate (not inoculated) on top of that in an even layer. I then top it off with 1" of pre-moistened 100% potting soil.
The purpose of adding the three non-inoculated jars of substrate is to give the mycelium extra nutrients to consume resulting in a longer life span and larger caps (twice the yeild).
You can e-mail me a request and I will e-mail back my casing instructions.

Thats interesting, you should post your recipe here...

I would imagine that the extra nutrients would be more prone to contams then the colonized substrate... Casings are easily contaminated as is. You would probably be better off just adding 6 1/2 pints of fully colonized grain, and forget the 3 uncolonized 1/2 pints....
