so the physical body is a testament to what happens to the mind?

There is nothing glamourous about death but the idea is you rise above the physical plain and leave that state into another dimension, realm or whatever.

the body is just a vessel

i dont give a fuck what happens to my body when i die

No
once our body dies our brain stops working and our thoughts are no more
we are no more.
we don't go anywhere...
A body isn't a car we get in and then get out off at death
once our body dies, we die. nothing else happens

have you ever had an out-of-body experience grphish?

we're all talking out of our asses because none of us know. but the answer is out there. thousand upon thousand of monks have devoted their entire lives to figuring this out. theyve completely shut themselves off from the distractions of busy-body life, and theyve made progress. Read the Tibetan Book of the Dead sometime. In that book the tibetan practitioners 'charted' out the various bardo states that one enters along the path from dying to rebirth into one's next life-form.

i bet youd change your mind if you had a near-death or death-rebirth experience; your conciousness separates from your mind, you move rapidly through a tunnel or tunnels toward a warm, loving, all-knowing white light, being helped along the way by 'others.'
Quote:
"Those who undergo a near-death experience feel embraced by something much greater than themselves, or anything they previously could have imagined: the "source of all existence." There becomes certainty that life exists after death. Those who reach the mystical level of the NDE emerge with a greater appreciation for life, less fear of death, and a reorientation of their priorities to less material and more spiritual pursuits." -Rick Strassman, MD

It's a scary thought isn't it. That's what keeps most people from even entertaining such an idea. Personally I've come to accept the idea. Although as I said I'm not sure what happens. But I'm not to worried about after. I concerned with the now. The present moment is what truly matters. (IMO)

Okay I'll keep this simple and short.
200 years ago we were nothing. We did not exist. Our brains were not created yet.
We weren't really dead, we were just nothing. We did not exist yet.

When we are born and as we develop, we live our lives through all of our senses.
Our senses are used by the brain, everything we see and experience is in the brain.

So before we were born, there was nothing. Then once our brains were created, we have life.
If I was to take a shotgun and blow my brains out,
wouldnt it be EXACTLY the same thing as before I was born?

Its not a bad thing (no afterlife,) its just nothing.

Nothing is good. Its like sleeping, except for forever. We won't even know.

Makes sense?

Your making just as many assumptions as someone who claims a before or afterlife, plus the fact that you confuse the brain with the mind just as most western materialists do.

Yes ive had an out of body experience
that doesn't prove anything, its all part of your brain... even the OOBE is produced by your brain

If you are really naive enough to believe that your entire concious experience are a production purely of the chemicals in your brain, then you are stuck in gross materialist views, and living in ignorance.

The brain is like the office of the mind. The mind is king as it is beyond the material condition. This is discovered with deep clarity in meditation. There have been scientific studies into this also, how the mind can directly affect the material condition and direct brain chemistry and acitivity in deep meditation.

No the mind and body are connected for sure. And I love the office analogy.

I downloaded an audio book called your body is your subconscious mind. I'm looking forward to listening to that, I always scold myself when I talk about treating my body better, or doing something for my body.

I am my body

And I've known this for years. When will I stop referring to my body like it's separate. Geeeeez

EVERYTHING is a product of your brain. What you perceive to be real is merely electrical signals from your senses interpereted by your brain. (Read: Allegory of the Den by socrates).

What if our senses are severly lacking? What if there are things that exist which we cannot sense without some form of 'enlightenment'...a sort of attainment of Nirvana which so many Buddhist monks try (and not try) to reach? Some people meet archetypes here, some people meet 'other' intelligences. These energy-beings are curious about our physical world and are interested in our feelings, etc. When people communicate with things of this nature are they only communicating with themselves?

What i dont understand is how someone who has taken psychadelics and has first-hand witnessed different forms of reality can be so sure that the sober one is the only one which exists.

isnt it amazing how little science actually knows about the 'mind.' What is it? :boggle: We know all of about the biological processes, etc, but nothing about what creates this intangible thing we call our conciousness.

There has been much research done on the subject. I would look for anything in the library on the mind as I have found most of the books I have found fascinating.

But, while Zen and the Brain is a very long and technically interesting book, I found some of the stuff in "The Minds I" to be well worth reading. Check it out.
Mind Matters was excellent as well.

Funny thing I read.... "They"(Scientists  )  were looking for consciousness. And some of them thought they were close. They were calling what they were about to discover the seat of consciousness. You know, where it all happens. They said it was at the top of the head, a few inches down, and it wasn't very large at all.

The seat of consciousness was about to be discovered. It was only a matter of time. And they were close.

Turns out they were wrong, that area, although important, was deeply connected to all sorts of other areas. No seat after all. And to this day we still look. But most neuro scientists now are concerned with complex processes that take place in many areas at once. Because the brain functions that way.

Most of the sciences in general, are focused on complexity theory, which used to be called chaos theory. True story, Batman told in a comic book. Or I read it in multiple science books. One of the two.

We cannot prove one way or another whether there is an afterlife. For one the question of such is extremely ambiguous. This is a question that will likely never be answered. It has been discussed for the greater part of human existence. We are inquisitive creatures who by our very nature seek to know everything that is possible to be known and some things that cannot be known. The afterlife is simply unknown.

The only afterlife i see is that we make the grass greener...

the only form of "afterlife" i can believe in, is the energy from our body being transfered to some other living organism.. since energy can't really be destroyed or created. it has to go somewhere when we die...

like your corpse is underground and a rat eats you... voila, transfer of energy!
