Openminded Christians?

Reading ElmyshShade's post in support group on speaking out about the good side of psychedelic drugs in a christian forums got me thinking about Pat Robertson style Christians and the alternatives for people who might like to be Christian but don't want to identify with that.

I think it is good to have the support of a group of like-minded people. The Shroomery is good, but there is alot to be said for real life. Many Christian churches have a reputation for close-minded conformity. What are the options for settled, open-minded people with Christian beliefs?

I don't presently choose to identify myself as a "Christian", but I grew up as part of a Quaker meeting (Religious Society of Freinds). I know from experience that many Quaker groups are much more accepting and open-minded than the steriotypical Christian. Different meetings (churches without the special building) have different standards, but Quakers as a group range from fairly mainstream Protestants to groups of people who refuse to identify themselves as Christian, and frequently tend to Buddist or New Age beliefs.

Another alternative I've heard about, but don't know much about, are the Unitarians. I'm not really sure if they qualify as Christian, though they do come from a Christian tradition.

Anyone else have knowlege or experience with tolerable Christian groups?

yeah i like the bible and christ and everything and agree wiht it..but i also mix a bunch of other religions with it.

so im a free-thinker i guess

The Quakers are the best group of "christians" I have ever met. While I certainly wouldn't consider myself a Christian (or a member of any organized religion), I've had some great discussions with many a Quaker and left agreeing with much of what they said. I hold a lot of respect for people who are able to grasp the spirituality of a belief, and not get caught up in the details, rules, and judgement that usually follows when one takes a "Religion" as their own.

Quakers seem good folks.

Oddly, many of the "usual laypeople" of the non-right-wing-focused denominations seem to do quite well also:
Greek Orthodox, lax Catholics, Unitarian-Universalists (w/ Christian flavouring!), Methodists, Anglicans, Episcopalians, Presbyterian Church USA (distinct from Presbyterian Church of America -- yes, it matters ;-)) -
I've even chatted with some cool priests and ministers who may not be "hip" to my drug use, but aren't all about the "my way or Hell!"
