Does this completely disprove an afterlife?
    #6607982 -

Okay I'll keep this simple and short.
200 years ago we were nothing. We did not exist. Our brains were not created yet.
We weren't really dead, we were just nothing. We did not exist yet.

When we are born and as we develop, we live our lives through all of our senses.
Our senses are used by the brain, everything we see and experience is in the brain.

So before we were born, there was nothing. Then once our brains were created, we have life.
If I was to take a shotgun and blow my brains out,
wouldnt it be EXACTLY the same thing as before I was born?

Its not a bad thing (no afterlife,) its just nothing.

Nothing is good. Its like sleeping, except for forever. We won't even know.

Makes sense?

The christians would say you're given a soul at birth, and that's eternal.

But I think you're right, we're worm food, and not even there to bear witness.

Yeah but the Christians also believe in Adam in Eve and deny evolution.

Evolution is a fact. Its been proved. Our lives are no more important than a squirrel.

We're all fucking animals. Just because we can think more doesnt mean we are special.

While I agree that we are living our lives through our senses, I would also argue that there's more going through our minds than just the experiences. If we were to control an area in which two different children were raised, would they be the exact same as a result of identical stimuli from birth? Personally I don't think so.

Certain people are disposed to certain behaviors. Maybe that's no indication of an afterlife, but it does seem to imply that there is continuity in the bloodline.

In addition, one might argue that our consciousness does not die. Because although there is evidence that it is a product of the brain, there is no evidence that it does not exist elsewhere.

I haven't ruled out the possibility of an afterlife, although the analytical mind demands that I do so.

This presents another thought:

Suppose humans are given consciousness only as a result of mutations of the brain. Our developed consciousness is at this point, a hindrance. It demands that we have social contact, question things, and perform all the other useless actions which are in no way an aid to the procreation of the species.

Wouldn't then, evolution take care of this consciousness? Would it not demand that this trait be removed over a long period of time? The only reason it wouldn't, would be if it were providing some benefit to humanity.

Perhaps the benefit is something as rudimentary as the ability to build dwellings for shelter. Or perhaps the benefit is the desire to understand things?

I can't really make a case here, I'm just speculating. Know that I'm mainly inclined to agree with your theory of the end of consciousness.

The ability to think brings with it advantages against those who don't.

We can kill monkeys no problem, cause those stupid fucks don't have tools.

It DOES give us a major evolutionary advantage relative to other species.

Oddly enough, it almost removes selective pressure within the human race.

Now everyone breeds, and if you conceive a deformed child, you get millions of dollars of surgery at health insurance expense to let it live and pass on it's shitty genes.

That makes perfect sense to me, and I completely agree.

On the physical level I think you are right.

But do I think you just solved to whole life after death in a few words?

Far from it.

"We" as individuals may not have existed, but only because we existed collectively in undifferentiated consciousness, to which we will return.

I would say it is experienced through the brain by consciousness, which precedes existence.

Yes. Undifferentiated consciousness, from which other conscious beings will emanate.

Please don't lump all Christians into one group. Not all Christians interpret the Bible literally.

Physiologically, we are indeed animals, and we are born as such. I believe, however, that we can attain to a higher awareness beyond our animal nature.

Really? You have proof of this? Would you mind explaining exactly what Heaven and Hell are? Theologians certainly are not in agreement over this.

You want my opinion?
Energy can only be converted to matter and matter converted to energy neither is destroyed.
Life is an endless cycle as observed in all things in nature and the universe..
Death brings renewal, death brings rebirth.. death brings life, it is a natural part of the cycle of life.
A constant cycle, that never ends.
If physical existance ends.. what makes you so sure your consciousness does as well?
I guess there's only one way to find out.
But me I'd rather not debate belief systems and just live life while living it cause its pretty damn interesting. Death is whatever... it happens when it happens. If you want to cease to exist fine with me but I'm gonna keep on going.

I don't remember anything from when I was 1-2 years old but that doesn't mean I wasn't conscious.

I also don't remember most of my dreams but that doesn't mean I don't dream or that my consciousness isn't working when I'm asleep.

imo something like this disproves the 'worm food' theory. but then again it's just a picture.

So the vastness of space somehow refutes the fact that we're insignificant naked apes?
